No. 5 UNC routs NC State
Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) – Brandan Wright posted a career-high 24
points as fifth-ranked North Carolina defeated North Carolina State, 83-64, at
the Smith Center.
Tyler Hansbrough scored 20 points and collected seven rebounds for the Tar
Heels (24-4, 10-3 ACC), who have won two straight and four of five. Danny
Green added eight points, eight boards, three blocks and a pair of assists.
Brandon Costner scored 18 points, including three-of-four from beyond the arc
for the Wolfpack (14-12, 4-9), losers in four of their last five. Engin
Atsur had 16 points and four assists, and Gavin Grant contributed 14 points to
go with five rebounds.
Down by one point after the break, Costner’s trey 3:14 into the second half
pulled NC State into a 45-45 deadlock, but UNC used a 23-9 streak to forge
ahead 68-54, on Green’s three with 8:41 to go.
Costner sank two from the line and the Wolfpack were within 12 points, 70-58,
but the Tar Heels ran away with the game from there, using a pressure defense
and a quick transition game to finish on a 13-6 clip and defeat their long-
time intra-state and conference rivals.
Both teams went basket-for-basket in the early going, until the Wolfpack used
an 11-4 run to go ahead by five, 25-20, midway through the half. North
Carolina turned around and took a one-point lead thanks to a pair from the
line by Hansbrough. The Pack responded and led once again, 34-32 on Atsur’s
three with 4:16 to play.
However, the Heels ended the half with a 9-6 burst started by Green’s jumper
and ending with Wright’s hit with 42 seconds to go, and UNC took a slim 41-40
lead to intermission.
