No. 18 Duke topples Clemson
Clemson, SC (Sports Network) – Jon Scheyer scored 18 points to lead 18th-
ranked Duke to a 71-66 victory over Clemson.
Greg Paulus overcame nine turnovers by contributing 14 points for the Blue
Devils (21-7, 8-6 ACC), who nearly blew a 21-point halftime lead. DeMarcus
Nelson had 16 points and Josh McRoberts 10 for Duke, which shot 52.2 percent
from the field to win their third in a row.
Duke has also beaten Clemson 21 straight times.
Vernon Hamilton and Cliff Hammonds each scored 14 for the Tigers (19-8, 5-8),
who have lost three in a row and six of their last seven games. Hammonds also
had nine assists for Clemson.
The Tigers were within 69-64 with 6.5 seconds left, but Scheyer nailed two
free throws with 5.7 seconds remaining to seal Duke’s win.
Although there was just a five-point difference, the result wasn’t as close as
the first meeting on January 25 when David McClure dropped in a layup just
before time expired to give Duke a 68-66 triumph.
The Blue Devils distanced themselves from Clemson with an 18-1 spurt in the
first half. Paulus drilled a three-pointer during the spurt, and his free
throw moved the margin to 31-14 with 4:48 remaining until halftime. It was
42-21 at intermission.
Nine consecutive Clemson points closed the gap to 47-42 with Hamilton ending
the burst with a layup midway through the second half.
However, Duke widened its lead to as many as 12 again at 59-47 with 5:13
remaining following a three from Scheyer. The Tigers never got closer than
K.C. Rivers had three of Clemson’s 11 steals…The Tigers made half of their
18 free throws…Scheyer made all three of his shots beyond the arc, helping
Duke to a 7-for-14 performance from three-point range.
