Heath, San Diego State knock off No. 21 BYU
San Diego, CA (Sports Network) – Brandon Heath scored 30 points, pulled down
seven rebounds, dished out seven assists and added four steals as San Diego
State knocked off No. 21 BYU, 86-74 at Cox Arena.
Mohamed Abukar added 27 points while Jerome Habel added 12 for the Aztecs
(20-8, 9-5 MWC), who have won seven of their last eight games.
Jonathan Tavernari scored 18 points with seven boards and Austin Ainge donated
17 points for the Cougars (21-7, 11-3), who had an eight-game winning streak
Early on the game was tied, but after a tip-in by Lee Cummard, the Aztecs
ripped off 18 straight points, including 12 by Heath, and had a 22-4 lead
after Abukar nailed a jumper with 12:54 left in the first half.
The Cougars later responded with nine straight points to cut their deficit to
30-16 with a little over eight minutes left in the opening 20 minutes.
San Diego State, though, closed the half with an 11-5 run and took a
commanding 43-25 lead into the locker room.
The Aztecs maintained a comfortable lead throughout much of the second half
until three consecutive triples by the Cougars got the team to within 10,
67-57 with 6:27 to play after Tavernari drained a shot from beyond the arc.
San Diego State, however, scored the next five points to build a 72-57 lead
with a bit over five minutes to play and never led by less than nine points
the remainder of the game.
San Diego State plays in Utah on Tuesday…BYU plays at Air Force on
Tuesday…BYU leads the series, 40-20…The Aztecs shot a blistering 58
percent from the floor while BYU connected on 45 percent of its shots…San
Diego State’s Lorenzo Wade had 10 points…The Cougars committed 19 turnovers
leading to 20 points for the Aztecs.
