Chalmers leads No. 6 Kansas over Iowa State
Lawrence, KS (Sports Network) – Mario Chalmers scored 18 points and grabbed
seven rebounds to lead sixth-ranked Kansas over Iowa State, 89-52, at Allen
Darrell Arthur added 15 points and 11 rebounds and Julian Wright had 12 points
for the Jayhwaks (25-4, 12-2 Big 12), who have won six straight and nine of
10. Sherron Collins also had 12 points for Kansas, which never trailed in the
contest and coasted to the victory.
Kansas remains tied atop the Big 12 standings with Texas A&M. The Aggies
defeated Baylor earlier on Saturday.
Dodie Dunson had eight points to lead a lackluster offensive effort from the
Cyclones (14-14, 5-9), who have lost four of six.
Kansas wasted little time jumping on the Cyclones, scoring 20 of the first 24
points to forge a lead that began too much for Iowa State to overcome. Arthur
scored seven of the points for the Jayhawks during the runs, which he ended
with a tip in at the 9:41 mark.
A 12-3 run a little later turned a 22-8 lead into a 34-11 advantage. Wright
scored six of the points as Kansas cruised into the locker room with a 43-15
The flood gate completely opened in the second half, as Kansas, led by
Chalmers, scored 11 of the first 13 points to go ahead 54-17. Chalmers had
five of the 11 points and later drained a three-pointer for a 69-26 advantage
midway through the stanza.
Kansas later called off the dogs and cruised to the finish.
Kansas swept the season series from the Cyclones for a second straight
year…Sasha Kaun and Darnell Jackson each had 10 points…Mike Taylor, Corey
McIntosh and Rahshon Clark each had seven points for ISU.
