Duke dominates St. John’s
New York, NY (Sports Network) – Greg Paulus scored 19 points to lead 18th-
ranked Duke to a 67-50 thumping of St. John’s at Madison Square Garden.
DeMarcus Nelson added 14 points and seven boards for the Blue Devils (22-7),
who have won four straight after losing four in a row. Jon Scheyer had 11
points for Duke, which never trailed in this game and led by as many as 26
LaMont Hamilton had 17 points to lead the Red Storm (15-14), who have lost
three straight. Anthony Mason Jr. tallied 13 points for St. John’s, which
attempted to make it interesting in the second half.
Duke wasted little time jumping all over St. John’s, scoring the first 12
points of the game and holding a 34-8 lead late in the first half before going
into halftime with a 34-10 lead.
Paulus had 11 first-half points for the Blue Devils, outscoring the Red Storm
on his own. Only a Eugene Wilson free throw with just under 1 1/2 minutes
left in the half put St. John’s in double figures heading into the break.
The Red Storm tried to get back into the game in the second half. A pair of
Mason free throws with 4:15 left drew the Johnnies to within 51-39, but St.
john’s didn’t get any closer the rest of the way.
SJU had only three first-half buckets from the field…The Red Storm also
committed 11 turnovers in the first 20 minutes…Duke leads the all-time
series 11-5…Josh McRoberts finished with nine points, six rebounds and six
blocks for Duke.
