Washington downs No. 23 USC

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) – Ryan Appleby scored 22 points on 6-of-10
shooting as Washington downed 23rd-ranked Southern California, 85-70.

Jon Brockman added 17 points and was 7-of-9 from the floor for the Huskies
(17-12, 7-10 Pac 10), who snapped a four-game skid. Spencer Hawes chipped in
with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Justin Dentmon finished with 12
points.

Nick Young had a game-high 26 points for the Trojans (21-9, 11-6), who lost
for the first time in three games but remained third in the Pac 10 standings.
Gabe Pruitt netted 13 points and Taj Gibson had 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Trojans entered the second half down by 11 and trailed by as many as 16
points, 57-41, when Quincy Pondexter got loose for a lay-in with just over 17
minutes left.

Southern California finally responded and slowly chipped away. Pruitt’s layup,
with 4:13 left, got the Trojans within six, 72-66, with 4:13 remaining.

But, Washington responded with four consecutive points by Hawes over the next
1 1/2 minutes to extend its lead back to double-digits, 76-66.

The Trojans did not have a final run in them as Washington coasted to the
finish line.

Washington broke open a close game with a 19-7 burst in the closing stages of
the first half. Pondexter and Appleby highlighted the flurry by dropping
consecutive threes and the Huskies had a comfortable 14-point cushion, 44-30,
with just over three minutes to go until intermission.

USC recovered a bit from there but still trailed, 48-37, at intermission.

Game Notes

Washington was 10-of-18 from beyond-the-arc. USC was just 5-of-18…The
Huskies won the battle of the boards, 29-26…Appleby was 5-of-7 from long
range.
