Davidson captures Southern title over College of Charleston
Charleston, SC (Sports Network) – Stephen Curry poured in 29 points and
grabbed eight rebounds as Davidson held off College of Charleston, 72-65, to
capture the Southern Conference Tournament title.
Boris Meno posted 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats (29-4), who have
won 13 in a row and 25 of their last 26 contests.
Jermaine Johnson and David Lawrence each scored 13 points, while Johnson
grabbed seven boards for the Cougars (22-11), who couldn’t take advantage of
the home crowd to capture their first conference tournament title since 1999.
Davidson held a 37-35 advantage at halftime and opened up a 47-39 advantage on
Curry’s layup five minutes into the second half before Charleston answered
with an 11-1 run to grab a 50-48 lead on a Lawrence trey.
Curry responded with a three of his own and the game remained tight down the
stretch before Davidson ripped off eight straight points to take a 64-59 lead
with 4:02 remaining. Three free throws brought the Cougars back within two,
but Davidson held Charleston at arm’s length the rest of the way to clinch
the school’s ninth conference tournament title.
Davidson swept all three meetings with Charleston this season and owns a
commanding 44-9 advantage in the all-time series between the schools.
