Taylor leads No. 16 Ducks past Trojans for Pac-10 title
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) – Bryce Taylor couldn’t miss all night, going
a perfect 11-of-11 from the field — including 7-of-7 from three-point range
— for a career-high 32 points, as 16th-ranked Oregon blasted Southern
California, 81-57, to capture the Pac-10 Tournament championship.
Taylor, who also made all three of his free throw attempts, set the tournament
record for field goal percentage in a game and was named the tourney MVP.
Tajuan Porter scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds and Aaron Brooks had
15 points and seven boards for the Ducks (26-7), who lost three straight and
five of six in February before ripping off six straight wins en route to the
Lodrick Stewart scored 12 points and Nick Young had 10 for the Trojans
(23-11), who were looking for there first Pac-10 Tournament championship in
Gabe Pruitt, coming off a 26-point performance in USC’s semifinal win over
Washington State, finished with just six points on 2-of-12 shooting.
The game was a rematch of the 2003 tournament championship, which saw Oregon
come away with a 74-66 victory.
A pair of Taj Gibson buckets gave the Trojans an early 7-2 lead, but it was
all down hill from there as Oregon began to impose its will on USC.
Malik Hairston hit a jumper and Brooks and Taylor made back-to-back threes to
ignite a 19-2 Ducks that gave Oregon a 12-point lead, 21-9, on Brooks’ layup
with nine minutes remaining in the first half.
A pair of Stewart baskets sandwiched around a Keith Wilkinson layup briefly
brought USC within six, but Taylor hit another three to spark nine straight
Oregon points for a 30-15 advantage with just over five minutes to play.
The Ducks took a 37-24 lead into the locker room and then came out firing to
start the second half. Taylor opened up with a pair of three-pointers
to go along with a jumper and Oregon’s lead was quickly up to 21.
The Trojans briefly got their deficit back down to 15, but Oregon put the game
away with an impressive 22-2 run, capped by three-straight threes — two by
Brooks and one by Taylor — to grab a 67-32 lead midway through the second
This was the third tournament championship appearance for the Trojans…USC
swept the regular-season series with Oregon…The Ducks as a team shot 48
percent from three-point range (14-of-29).
