Colorado State axes Layer
Fort Collins, CO (Sports Network) – Colorado State fired head men’s basketball
coach Dale Layer, director of athletics Paul Kowalczyk announced Monday.
“After evaluating our men’s basketball program over the past season and seeing
where we are today, I felt it is time to move in a different direction,”said
The Rams went 17-13 this season, but a 6-10 record in the Mountain West
Conference earned them a sixth-place finish. Layer still had one year left on
a five-year extension he signed following the 2003 season, when he led the
Rams to a MWC Tournament title. Colorado State fell to Duke in the first round
of that year’s NCAA Tournament.
The 19-14 season in 2003 was the most wins during Layer’s seven seasons at
Colorado State, where he compiled a 103-106 overall record.
“It has indeed been an honor and a privilege to serve as head coach at
Colorado State for the past seven years,” said Layer. “I greatly appreciate
the opportunity and will always be a Ram at heart.”
