Spencer not to return as Highlanders head coach

Riverside, CA (Sports Network) – UC Riverside head coach David Spencer, who
missed most of the 2006-07 season due to health issues, announced on Tuesday
he would not return to the school.

“This has been the most difficult decision of my life,” said Spencer. “I had
waited my whole life to become a head coach, so to walk away from the job is
painful. But I simply do not know if my health will allow me to fulfill the
duties and obligations of the position of head coach.”

Spencer stepped away from the Highlanders on November 3 with an undisclosed
medical condition. He had been cleared to return by doctors in mid-January,
but he suffered a setback when he fell and broke a femoral cap in his
leg. He later underwent surgery and had pins and a rod inserted into his
leg. Interim head coach Vonn Webb took over and led UC Riverside to a 7-24

“My foremost concern is for David’s health and well-being,” said UCR athletics
director Stan Morrison. “Given the conversations that I have had with him, we
both agree that it is time for him to move on and turn the reins over to a new
coach. With that, we will begin the process of hiring a new head coach
