Louisville clobbers Stanford in tourney opener
Lexington, KY (Sports Network) – Edgar Sosa and David Padgett led a balanced
Louisville attack with 16 points apiece as the Cardinals cruised past
Stanford, 78-58, in the first round of the South Region of the NCAA
Derrick Caracter and Earl Clark each contributed 12 points for the sixth-
seeded Cardinals (24-9), who were coming off a 65-59 defeat to Pittsburgh in
the semifinals of the Big East Tournament. Jerry Smith posted 10 points in the
Louisville, which was playing just 78 miles from its campus, has won eight of
its last nine and will face either third-seeded Texas A&M or 14th-seeded Penn
in the second round on Saturday.
Brook Lopez scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the 11th-seeded
Cardinal (18-13), who dropped to 19-14 in NCAA Tournament play and haven’t won
the championship since the 1941-42 campaign. Lawrence Hill donated 10 points
with seven boards in defeat.
