Hoosiers top Gonzaga
Sacramento, CA (Sports Network) – Roderick Wilmont scored 22 points and
grabbed seven rebounds, as familiar foes collided at ARCO Arena, with
the Indiana Hoosiers downing the Gonzaga Bulldogs, 70-57, in the first round
of the NCAA Tournament.
The seventh-seeded Hoosiers will now have to face second-seeded UCLA on
Saturday. The Bruins routed Weber State, 70-42, in the West bracket on
D.J. White posted 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Hoosiers (21-10), who are
making their second consecutive appearance in the Big Dance and 34th overall
in school history. Earl Calloway netted 11 points for the Hoosiers.
Abdullahi Kuso and Derek Raivio both scored 12 points for the Bulldogs
(23-11). David Burgess added 11 points for the Bulldogs, who, after falling
to Memphis back on February 17th, won their final five games of the
season, including a 77-68 victory over Santa Clara in the West Coast
Conference Tournament title game.
Gonzaga cut its deficit to 45-41 nearing the midway point of the second half.

The Bulldogs managed to cut their deficit to single digits, 63-55, on Matt
Bouldin’s three with 2:33 remaining. However, Wilmont came right back and
nailed a trey of his own, and White’s slam about a minute later made the score
68-55, to put the game out of reach heading toward the final minute.
With the score deadlocked at 11 about five minutes into the game, Indiana went
on a 9-1 spurt capped by Wilmont’s three-pointer with 11:04 remaining.
But Gonzaga ripped off the next eight points to re-tie the score, 20-20, with
6:22 to go. The Hoosiers regained a slight edge down the stretch for a 34-29
Indiana has a deep tradition in the NCAA Tournament. The team has collected
five national titles, third most in college basketball behind only UCLA (11)
and Kentucky (7)…Although the two schools have only played each other three
times, Indiana and Gonzaga met in the second round of last season’s
Tournament, in which Gonzaga came up with a 90-80 victory.
