Brewer, Gators rout Jackson State
New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) – Corey Brewer scored 21 points to lead the
defending national champion Florida Gators over the Jackson State Tigers,
112-69, in first-round action of the NCAA Tournament.
Joakim Noah added 17 points and 12 boards for the Midwest Bracket’s top-
seed Gators (30-5), who pulled away in the second half after a opening 20
minutes of action. Chris Richard also had 17 points and Al Horford had 15
points and 16 boards for Florida, which will next face ninth-seeded Purdue in
the second round on Sunday.
Trey Johnson scored 25 points to lead Jackson State (21-14), which entered the
tournament as the SWAC’s Tournament champion. Grant Maxey added 12 points for
the 16th-seeded Tigers, who became overmatched in the second half.
Jackson State led by as many as three points in the first half, with its final
lead coming with 6 1/2 minutes left when Maxey hit a layup for a 26-25 edge.
Florida, though, answered by scoring the next 11 points and carried a 41-35
lead into halftime.
The Gators then scored the initial eight points of the second half, extending
to a 49-35 cushion and the rout was one. A Noah layup later in the half gave
Florida a 55-38 lead and a Lee Humphrey trey with just over four minutes
elapsed ended a 17-6 run for a 61-41 cushion. Humphrey scored all 12 of his
points during the surge.
