Houston gives Penders one-year extension

Houston, TX (Sports Network) – The University of Houston extended the contract
of men’s basketball coach Tom Penders for one year on Thursday.

The new contract will keep Penders with the team until 2012.

This past season Penders guided the Cougars to an 18-15 record and their best
finish in Conference USA. Houston lost to Memphis, 71-59, in the conference

He has been the head coach at Houston for the past three years and has a 57-39
record at the school and a career record of 584-400. He reached the 50-win
plateau at Houston in 83 games, the shortest span in school history.

“Tom has improved the program very dramatically and we feel certain that will
continue,” said athletics director Dave Maggard. “We wanted to keep our
continuity and we wanted to let everyone know of our confidence in what he is
doing here.”
