Day One: NBA Summer League Recap
I want to share with my HoopsVibe readers on what’s going on in the summer league in Las Vegas.
The newest drafted rookies, undrafted players, free agents, and current NBA players are all battling it out. Let’s take a look at some performances.
Yi Jianlian: Played with Team China and had a very good game. He shot 7-15 scoring 23 points. He had some nice dunks and turnaround jumpers. He played very good defense and played physical. He made 9 of 12 from the free throw line. He also committed 10 fouls himself. When asked if Yi would play for the Bucks next season his agent Dan Fegan said "No Way".
Sun Yue: Also playing with Team China, had a solid perfomance. He dished out 9 assist in the game, he showed improvement on the defensive end. Still overall has work to do on his complete game.
Mike Conley Jr: Did his usual, start off slow, but once he got comfortable came into his own and played well. He had 12 points scoring on lay ups and floaters. He did well getting to the basket, and also leading the offense.
Rudy Gay: Peformed well and played with aggressiveness. He threw down a reverse dunk on Yi and then got a tech for boasting about it. He finished the game with 21 points.
LaMarcus Aldridge: Played very good. He was 10-17 shooting and finished the game with 26 points and 11 rebounds. He showed a nice inside/outside game. He shot from as deep as 19 feet. He showed alot of energy, ran the floor well, and played with good athleticism. He still needs to add strength and improve defensively to handle the PF position. Once him and Oden get on the same page watch out!
Greg Oden: Picked up 3 quick fouls and sat the bench most of the first quarter. He ended up committing 10 fouls during the game, playing just 20 minutes and scoring 6 points. Greg looked real rusty and frustrated, some of it could be because of the long draft process he just went through.
Glen Davis: Struggled in his pro debut. He shot 0-5 and had just 3 points. The way he played, it doesn’t even look like he’ll be much of an NBA player at this point.
Gerald Green: Looks like he’s developing into a better player. His consistency and maturity level still needs to improvement. He became frustrated in the game after making mistakes with the ball. He made some nice plays on the open floor, showing his athleticism and upsides to his game.
Kevin Durant: Started off slow, but came on late in the game. Some of his shots were blocked, he missed 4 of his first 5 shots. Even though he shot 5-18, he still scored 18 points and showed flashes of what he did at Texas. He was good in the post although his defenders were smaller. Of course he showed his athleticism. Overall not bad for his pro debut,
Jeff Green: Started off quick with the first 5 points. After that he was hesistant to shoot and his perimeter shot was off. He finished the game shooting 2-6 in 28 minutes of time having just 7 points. The positve though is it looks like Green and Durant will play well together.
DeSagana Diop: He still hasn’t developed any offensive skills. He missed all 6 shots all less than 5 feet away from the basket. Defensively he played well blocking shots and getting rebounds.
Nick Fazekas: Struggled in his pro debut. He shot 1-7 and had just 4 points. He tried a few three pointers two of them weren’t even close to the rim. In a half court set he plays solid. However playing with Dallas in an uptempo game may cause him to struggle.
Maurice Ager: Played real well, he knocked down some nice outside shots, threw down an impressive dunk, and finsihed the game with 17 points. Summer league improve his game so much.
Caleb Green: The undraftee is becoming one of my favorite players to root for. He is an all out worker, he does what it takes to prove he can play. In 17 minutes of time he had 8 points and shot the ball well. Overall he played well, he is really starting to remind me of Ryan Gomes.
Jason Smith: Looked nervous in his pro debut. The thing that stood out that most of us already knew was his lack of physical strength. He missed alot of shots around the basket, he needs to bulk up if he wants to be an effective big man. The way he looked, I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a tough a rookie year.
Thaddeus Young: He also looked nervous. He had alot of energy on the floor though, and knocked down a beautiful three point shot. He finished the game with just 5 points, but you can see the potential in him. He still has alot to work on before he is truly effective.
