Morrison's hot hand extends 'Zags home winning streak

Spokane, WA (Sports Network) - Adam Morrison scored 34 points and J.P. Batista
added 21, leading sixth-ranked Gonzaga to an 89-80 victory over Portland State
at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
Sean Mallon contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs (4-1), who were playing for the first time since losing to Connecticut in the championship game of the Maui Invitational last week. Gonzaga has won 27 straight home games, second-longest in the nation, and will try to end the country's longest home winning streak on Sunday at Washington. The Huskies have won 28 in a row at home. Ryan Sommer scored 18 points and Jake Schroeder added 16 for Portland State (2-4), which hung tough most of the way in the finale of its season-opening six-game road trip. Portland State opened a 10-5 lead just 3 1/2 minutes into the game on a three- pointer by Juma Kamara, but Gonzaga answered with the next eight points and never trailed again. Morrison started the run with a jumper and ended it with a bucket to give the Bulldogs a 13-10 edge. Gonzaga reeled off nine straight points, six by Batista, to grab a 24-14 advantage, but the Vikings battled back with a 10-4 run to pull within 28-24 with just under six minutes to play in the half. Five points from Morrison and four by Jeremy Pargo then fueled an 11-4 Gonzaga spurt to increase the lead to 11 at 39-28, and the Bulldogs carried a 41-32 cushion to the break. Morrison paced Gonzaga with 14 first-half points, while Batista chipped in 10. Sommer scored 10 for Portland State. The Vikings were within 41-38 early in the second half, but Batista scored seven points during a 13-5 spurt that gave the Bulldogs a 54-43 edge. Gonzaga eventually opened a 20-point cushion at 75-55 on a three-point play by Morrison with 7:48 remaining. Again, Portland State clawed back and a run of 12 straight points pulled the Vikings within 77-70, but Gonzaga made its free throws down the stretch to hold on.
