Tempe, AZ (Sports Network) - Jordan Farmar hit a running one-hander in the
lane with 3.6 seconds left in regulation to lift the 17th-ranked UCLA Bruins
over the Arizona State Sun Devils, 61-60, at Wells Fargo Arena.
Arron Afflalo went 12-of-12 from the free throw line and scored 15 of his team-high 21 points in the second half, and Josh Shipp chipped in 10 points for the Bruins (13-2, 3-1 Pac-10), who shot 1-of-15 from beyond the three- point arc. Serge Angounou scored a career-high 23 points and Kevin Kruger and Jeff Pendergraph both added 11 for the Sun Devils (6-7, 0-4), who have lost four straight including back-to-back one-point losses. After an Angounou dunk tied the game at 57-57 with a minute left to play, Farmar, who finished with just nine points, hit a leaner to put the Bruins ahead by two with 34.6 seconds left. Undaunted, Bryson Krueger nailed his only three-pointer of the game to put the Sun Devils up 60-59 with 12 seconds remaining before Farmar converted at the other end. Kruger's half-court heave at the buzzer fell short to seal the win for UCLA. Arizona State took advantage of UCLA's poor shooting in the first half to establish a 29-23 halftime lead. The Bruins shot 6-of-25 from the floor (24 percent), including 0-for-9 from beyond the arc, in the first half, while Angounou scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting to lead all scorers at the break. The Sun Devils held a modest four-point lead at 18-14 midway through the first half, but the Bruins' rallied to tie the game at 20-20. Arizona State, however, went on a 7-1 spurt capped by a Angounou jumper with 40 seconds left in the opening frame to push the Sun Devils' lead to 27-21. Down by six at the half, UCLA rallied with an 8-0 run to take the lead at 44-40 with just under 13 minutes left. But after falling behind by as much as five, the Sun Devils came back to tie the game at 54-54 with 2 1/2 minutes to play to set up the wild finish.
