Drazen Petrovic
![]() Drazen Petrovic Date of Birth:22 October 1964 Career accomplishments The late Drazen Petrovic, who was born in Sibenik, Croatia, was hailed as a superstar in his native land. As a young man in 1984-85, he once scored 112 points in a Croatian League game, hitting 40 of 60 from the field. He was a member of the silver medal-winning Yugoslavian (1988) and Croatian (1992) Olympic teams. He also led his Real Madrid Spanish league team to the European Cup Championship in February 1989, and led the Yugoslavian National Team to victory at the European Championships in June of that year. Petrovic's skills propelled him into a brief career in the NBA, cut short by his tragic death at the age of 28 in a car accident in Germany. Although he only played four seasons, it was evident that Petrovic was a budding NBA superstar. He began his career with the Portland Trail Blazers in 1989 before he was traded to the New Jersey Nets in 1991. He remained with the Nets until his death in 1993. Petrovic possessed exceptional shooting ability, and during his final season in 1992-93, he averaged a career-high and team-leading 22.3 ppg on 51.8 percent shooting from the floor, including 44.9 percent from three-point range. That season, he was third in the NBA in 3-point field goal percentage (.449) and was named to the All-NBA Third Team. In his four-year NBA career, he averaged 15.4 ppg on 50.6 percent shooting, including 43.7 percent from three-point range.
