Hoyas survive Hartford scare in opener
|
Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Jeff Green netted a game-high 17 points and
pulled down seven rebounds as eighth-ranked Georgetown survived to beat
Hartford, 69-59, in the season opener for both clubs at the MCI Center.
Roy Hibbert added 16 points and five boards for the Hoyas (1-0), who struggled mightily until pulling away in the final minutes. Jonathan Wallace contributed 13 points while Tyler Crawford pulled down a game-high nine rebounds for Georgetown in the win. Alex Zimnickas and Joe Zeginski both had 14 points for the plucky Hawks (0-1), who are coming off a 13-15 season. Bo Taylor chipped in with 12 points for Hartford. Georgetown struggled from the field in the early going as Hartford kept things interesting with some solid long-range marksmanship. The lightly-regarded Hawks held the Hoyas to just 37 percent shooting in the first half and trailed by just four, 31-27, at intermission. Hartford continued to chip away in the second half and trailed by just one, 54-53, with just under seven minutes remaining. But, the Hoyas finally awoke and started to pull away. A three-point play by Hibbert with 4:59 on the clock made it a 59-54 game and the Hawks could not recover from there. Game Notes Georgetown won the only previous meeting between these two teams, a 91-62 thrashing of Hartford during the 1998-99 campaign...Hartford is just 2-15 in season openers on the road.
