Tempe, AZ (Sports Network) - Daven Harmeling scored 16 points and 18th-ranked
Washington State held off Arizona State 48-47 at Wells Fargo Arena.
Derrick Low added 10 points for the Cougars (19-4, 8-3 Pac-10), who have won two straight and four of five. Low hit a pair of free throws with 15.5 seconds left that turned out to be the difference for Washington State, which won despite scoring just 12 second-half points. Jeff Pendergraph had 18 points and nine boards to lead Arizona State (6-16, 0-11), which has dropped 12 in a row and still without a victory in conference play. Christian Polk added 12 points for the Sun Devils, who rallied to make it interesting at the end. After Kyle Weaver's tip-in gave Washington State a 44-31 lead with 13:21 left, the Cougars went in to a major scoring drought and the Sun devils took advantage. Arizona State went on a 13-0 run and Pendergraph's turn-around jumper with 2:29 on the clock tied the game at 44-44. However, Robbie Cowgill's bucket with two minutes left ended the slump for the Cougars and put the team back in the lead, 46-44. The short bankshot ended the 11-minute, 21-second drought and was just the 10th point of the half for the team. Later, with the score the same, Polk missed an ill-advised three-pointer with 18 seconds left and Low grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He hit both to extend the lead to four points. Polk then hit a three-pointer with 1.9 seconds left and ASU called a time out. Washington State then turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds pass, allowing the Sun Devils one last chance with 1.3 left. Polk took the inbounds pass, got a good look, but his trey bounced out as time expired. Down 10-5 in the early stages, the Cougars went on a 19-4 run to build a double-digit lead. Harmeling scored eight points during the run, which was capped by a pair of Weaver free throws for a 24-14 cushion. Later, 10 straight points by Washington State increased its lead to 34-18. Aron Baynes scored the first five points of the surge, which allowed the Cougars to cruise into halftime with a 36-24 cushion. Game Notes Washington State swept the season series from the Sun Devils...WSU hit just 4- of-20 second half shots but still shot hit 41 percent for the game...ASU hit 35.8 percent of its shots for the contest.
