Sam Mitchell & Toronto Raptors Close To New Contract

The first card in the coaching deck looks to be staying put … Sam Mitchell, the NBA ‘s coach of the year, will likely re-sign with the Raptors … Read Mitchell’s comments on how contract negotiations are progressing….

Sam Mitchell, the NBA’s reigning coach of the year, will probably return to the sideline for the 2007-08 season.

Mitchell’s agent and the Raptors’ front office are close to agreeing on a new multi-year contract.

"I expect to be back in Toronto," the fiery coach told ESPN radio. "It’s a great fit for me, I know the players. Bryan Colangelo and I have worked well together, we understand each other, and right now we’re in the process of negotiating a deal, and hopefully next week we’ll have something to announce."

Mitchell’s contract expired after this past season. Even though he was in a lame-duck position, Mitchell still led the Raptors to a 47 win season, an Atlantic Division Title, and a return to the post-season.
