Milwaukee Bucks Won't Trade Yi Jianlian

Jul 6th, 2007
The Bucks have little interest in facilitating Yi's trade request ... In fact, Milwaukee's front office wants to meet with their Chinese prospect and convince him to report ... Click here for news on this story ... Marty Burns reports on the Milwaukee Bucks keeping Yi:

Two years ago Bucks general manager Larry Harris got lucky in the NBA Draft when he landed the No. 1 pick despite having just a 6.3 percent chance after finishing with only the sixth-worst record.

This year he's getting his karmic payback.

Harris thought he was doing a great thing for his team last week when he selected Chinese prospect Yi Jianlian with the No. 6 pick in the draft.

Yi is a considered a potential NBA star. The 6-foot-11 forward can score, rebound, pass and play facing the basket. Some have compared him to Dirk Nowitzki.

Unfortunately for Harris, what should have been a happy occasion in Milwaukee has turned into a nightmare.

Yi apparently doesn't want to play in Brew Town. Or at least his handlers --including notoriously tough agent Dan Fegan - don't want him there. They want Yi in a big market, one with a large Asian population.

"[We] won't sit here and do nothing just because he was picked by Milwaukee," Zhao Gang, one of Yi's representatives, told the official China Daily newspaper Tuesday. "We are considering Yi's future at the Bucks and are looking at trade possibilities."

Harris has no plans to comply.

"We're not trading him," Harris told SI.com. "We like him and we think this is a great opportunity for him. He'll get a chance to play a lot of minutes right away for a good team. What more could [he] want?"

Harris hoped to make that case in person Thursday afternoon when he was to meet with Yi at the Las Vegas Summer League. Yi is scheduled to play with his Chinese national team, while the Bucks are also fielding a team there.

So far the Bucks haven't heard from Yi at all. They have tried to reach out to him, but his handlers have declined the invitation. Not even a personal letter from Bucks owner Herb Kohl -- who happens to be a U.S. senator -- has been enough to persuade Yi.

I loved the yi fanfare but now its getting ridiculous, governer and senators pleading with yi to get a meeting. its time stop being mr nice guy, the bucks have been very polite to Yi and his reps and they've shown no respect. Time for a ultimatum, no meeting within the next week, yi can pack his bags and go back to china and rot there, and i'm a huge Yi fan, what yi or his agents are doing is bad for the league. if yi goes back to china for a year of no organize basketball, he will not even be drafted. Yi and his handlers have no leverage at all.

No, Yi in fact does NOT have leverage in this situation. He must play for Milwaukee or he can not play any professional basketball for anyone, anywhere. China will not let this happen with the olympics coming up next year. Yi put his name in the draft, and he got drafted by the Bucks. He needs to deal with it. He's acting like a spoiled litte girl who didn't get her way.

The bottom line is that top Chinese athletes are more important people than US senators and governors. That's reality now. Yi Jianlian will play where he wants to play and Kohl will bend over backwards to make that happen. The 21st century belongs to China.

I think its more of his reps than Yi. But he needs to speak up and say something to the Bucks, because overall it's his career and he's in charge not his reps. The Bucks have been respectful. Players like Kobe, Steve Francis, Eli Manning, and even John Elway. Need to stop feeling a sense of entitled after being drafted and suck it up. Don't enter the draft if you can't handle the process and be specators with the rest of us. It is an honor to be drafted, even more being a top 10 pick. Yi please come to your senses and just play the damn game. You're making it worse on yourself if you decide to pay and don't produce well. People are already wanting to call you a BUST.

Hey, Huge Papi- Milwaukee has over twenty nightclubs, hundreds of thousands of people, more festivals per year than any other city in the United States, and an incredible array of good restaurants. Athletes such as Ray Allen, Sam Cassell, Robin Yount, Prince Fielder, Rickie Weeks, Ervin Johnson, Mo Williams, Glenn Robinson, and Ben Sheets have all found living in Milwaukee good enough to praise it in the press. Your stupid, naive views are reflective of your never having been here. There's more to Milwaukee than beer and cheese, you ignorant douchebag. I'd suggest thinking about what you say before opening your mouth and making an ass of yourself.

First of all, if you need to put an alias as HugePapi4YourWife U must be "little as a toddler"! Have U ever been 2 my city, or do u know someone that visited, I truly doubt it. Yi does not have any leverage whatsoever! The NBA is not suffering that bad where they need the chinese market, by the way Yao must be African then. Speaking of Yao, he's in Houston! How many Asian-Americans live in Texas, New York maybe but not freakin' Texas! One more thing, Chinese athletes can't be that damn important in the U.S., otherwise we would have them coming by the boat loads like Cubans dummy!!! Yi & his reps. need to use their brains alittle harder and realize that he's not playin' anywhere else but good 'ol Milwaukee!!! Just like they stopped children comin' into the league they need to tell draft prospects that U go where U are drafted or the system becomes flawed!!! Now that's what's real!!!!I"m a true BUCKS FAN.........I'm out...........Holla!

china is not third world dumbass, if anything, its the most powerful nation in the world right now, and its growing! i've been to Milwaukee and it sucks my balls! yi wants to play for the $ not the rep, so if the NBA rejects him, so what? Yi has all the levearge in this situation because if all of america oppose, all of china will support, lets do a little math and democracy, who will win?

I feel sorry for Yi, his handlers are definitely the greedy bunch. I don't see how it would make any different playing in LA or Milwaukee, and this is coming from somebody from China. Somebody should tell Yi, that he does not have a choice, his handlers are probably telling him that Milwaukee is a hole and he has choices. The poor kid is being manipulated by a bunch of wolves! Yi will eventually be the biggest loser if he does not sign! His handlers are looking at Yao and see how much $$$$ his reps are making! Wake up Yi, for your goodness sake!

It's funny and kind of stupid to hear people talk smack about a town they have probably never been to or properly explored. "Well, I drove through there once and it sucked..." Milwaukee is an amazing city, and if you've never watched the sun rise over Lake Michigan next to the art museum you will never know. But it's not a booming city. It's not a big market and it does not have a large chinese population. These people are going to pimp out Yi for as much as possible, and they can probably squeeze more out of the situation if he was in another area. Which is b.s. You get picked by someone, you should go there. You whine and bitch and refuse to play there, you get blackballed, or traded if the team relents. That's my solution. It's a sport and a business, and this is bad business. So few make it to the NBA, anyone who does should be thankful and respectful. Yi will play in Milwaukee, or not in the NBA this year. Agents are the new lawyers. Kill em all.

Yi, Yi's reps, and the country of China have ALL the leverage here. The NBA and David Stern want to get their hands on the Chinese market. That means TEAM CHINA being allowed to play in Las Vegas Summer League. That means the All Star NBA D League playing in China this summer for the Stovlic Cup or whatever it's called in China. The NBA is allowing the Chinese government all this access to American basketball for only 1 reason: potential $$$ down the line if NBA China ever comes to frutition. Hell just showing NBA games on Chinese TV will make Stern jump for joy already. Think expanded merchandise sales among other things. In exchange, the Chinese governement can continue its delusional hopes that somehow this exposure to American basketball for its national team will allow Team China to somehow win a medal in the 2008 Olympics. Plus the NBA influx in China will allow the Chinese government to make residual money as well since it is afterall a socialist state. Because the NBA ultimately wants to manipulate China and make it NBA Jr., the NBA and Stern cannot tell Yi to screw off and play in Milwaukee or else. Stern must capitulate to the Chinese government (the entity ultimately in control of Yi even if not directly). If Stern forces Yi's handler's hands too much and gives a hard stance, the Chinese governement might in retaliation move away from its NBA ties, and David Stern fears this and China knows this as well. Hence you see Yi's handlers carrying all this leverage and openly demanding a trade because the Chinese governement is supporting all of this, and Stern is playing 2 roles, as both businessman and comissioner. There are socio-economic in play that so many posters on basketball forums simply overlook or do not understand. Even Jay Bilas and the Cold Pizza crew and most sports analysts don't get it, or they do get it but talking about it on TV or in articles would kill ratings because the average American teenager would be bored shit out of their minds. Besides the $$ factor, there is a cultural dilemma comparing Yi, a Chinese athlete being controlled by the Chinese government, to an American athlete like Greg Oden living in the United States choosing to do things on his own volition. Also, people refuse to see that Yi can play anywhere in the world, including Euroleague. Granted, everyone including Yi and China know the best level of basketball is played in the NBA, which is why he's in the draft at all and why the Chinese government is letting him play, so Yi can manipulate the lessons learned from the NBA and bring it back to China for Olympic glory, and indirectly acclimate the rest of the Chinese population to this level of basketball. The Chinese government sees itself as the 21st century USA. It's building itself as a nation economically and hopes to build other areas including culture, arts, and sports at the same time.National glory is arguably just as important here as $$ and that's why there is all this crap about Yi playing in Milwaukee.
