Will Matt Barnes & Golden State Warriors Finally Sign New Contract?

I don’t understand how Matt Barnes doesn’t have a contract for next year. The Mohawk threw down last season, especially in the post-season, where his spirited play helped the Warriors pull off a historic first round upset over the heavily-favored Mavericks.

But Barnes, an unrestricted free agent, is without a team in early August. What’s puzzling is that GMs have shown little interest. There’s been little mention of Barnes in the rumors section of various basketball websites …

Logging onto the net provides little information. I can read about the Wizards’ mysterious Euro prospect. I can read about Carlos Delfino’s unpleasant memoirs. And, regrettably, I can also read about No Ordinary Love, another product being pushed by Doug and Jackie Christie.

Until today, I couldn’t read about Barnes’ future. Lesser players have been getting more ‘pub.’ And lesser players have been getting decent contracts, too.

Austin Croshere, Larry Bird’s pet project, got a new contract. Travis Diener, a one-dimensional three-point shooter, got another year or two from Indiana. And Kareem Rush got some NBA love even though he had been balling in Europe for several years.

Barnes is better than Croshere, Diener, and Rush. So why can’t he get get a Morris Peterson/Desmond Mason contract for multiple years at or around the mid-level exception?

  • Barnes has had problems with his agent. The forward fired Dan Fegan and replaced him with super-agent Aaron Goodwin. Before that, Barnes fired his old agent in May and replaced him with Fegan. Look for Goodwin, an Oakland native, to get a deal done with the Warriors.
  • Barnes wants to start, while other team’s see him as a valuable bench piece. Before finding his niche in Oakland, Barnes was an NBA journeyman, so he doesn’t want to get stuck in a place where he won’t play.
  • Right or wrong, some teams view Barnes as a one season-wonder and are reluctant to commit to him.

Barnes was a pleasure to watch last year in Golden State. Hopefully, he gets a new contract. And hopefully, the Warriors are the team giving him that new contract.
