2007 USA Basketball Versus 1992 Dream Team: Jason Kidd or Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan, & LeBron James or Larry Bird

So let’s pit today’s superstars holding it down for the red, white, and blue against the 1992 Dream Team. Read the match-ups and get at us in the comment box below with your thoughts on who would best represent USA Basketball in the upcoming FIBA Americas Championship …

Fifteen years ago, the Dream Team captured the imagination of the world. NBA players were finally allowed to take part in the Barcelona Olympics and USA Basketball killed it, easily winning the gold medal.

Fans reminisce on that group as the finest collection of basketball talent ever assembled on one team. And hoop heads know them by their first name: Clyde, John and Karl, Scottie, Michael, Larry, Chris, Magic, David, Patrick, Charles, and the token college star Christian.

The 1992 summer Olympics also marked the peak of the NBA’s golden era; the start of Commissioner Stern’s global vision.

However, today’s stars are seen as evolved versions of yesterday’s greats. Yes, you heard right-evolved.  The new school is more athletic, more skilled, and some would argue more magnificent.

So let’s pit today’s superstars holding it down for the red, white, and blue against the 1992 Dream Team. Read the match-ups and get at us in the comment box below with your thoughts on who would best represent USA Basketball in the upcoming FIBA Americas Championship.

Decision 1: Present day Jason Kidd or 1992 Magic Johnson

The Details: is a Hall of Fame point guard. I love his ability to pass, rebound, and defend. But Magic Johnson is absolutely epic. He’s a slightly better passer than Kidd and possesses a more developed offensive game. The baby skyhook also edges out J-Kidd in the intangibles category.

The Call: No disrespect to Kidd, but I have to go with Magic.

Decision 2: Present day Kobe Bryant or 1992 Michael Jordan

The Details:
is the most talented basketball player of all-time. I can’t wait to see how his weight loss improves his perimeter defense and endurance. It’s scary to think he could have improved on last season. That said, Jordan was and still is an icon. In 1992, he was the NBA’s greatest basketball player and the world’s biggest athlete.

The Call: ‘I want to be like Mike.’ No disrespect to Bryant, but I have to give a very slight nod to Jordan. This could change as #24’s career evolves.

Decision 3: Present day LeBron James or 1992 Larry Bird

The Details: is on the verge of being The Man. Last year, James took some giant steps, leading the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals. Conversely, by 1992, Bird had started to break down and was at the end of his illustrious career. The great Celtic was 35; his back had given out on him.

The Call: I would go with the present day James over the 1992 Bird. However, Larry-legend had an amazing career and is a top five all-time player.
