FIBA: Carmelo Anthony Leads Team USA To Win Over Surprising Mexicans

It wasn’t ’40 minutes of Hell.’ But it was a decent run. Last night, the Americans faced an unexpected challenge from Nolan Richardson’s Mexican side, eventually pulling away in the second half and winning 127-100. It wasn’t ’40 minutes of Hell.’ But it was a decent run. Last night, the Americans faced an unexpected challenge from Nolan Richardson’s Mexican side, eventually pulling away in the second half and winning 127-100.

Richardson, the former coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks, still encourages an up-tempo game. And the Mexicans, behind their hustle and three-point shooting, gave Team USA some competition.

Stars and Stripes had blown-out Venezuela, the Virgin Islands, Canada, and Brazil, so it’s hard not to nit-pick a very comfortable win against Mexico. This isn’t fair. Team USA looked pretty solid against their neighbors to the south.

Still, here are some observations:

  • Nolan Richardson. Mike Krzyzewski.  Arkansas. Duke. Did anybody else get that 1990’s feel? I was half-expecting Todd Day and Corliss Williamson to suit up against Bobby Hurley and Christian Laettner.
  • Team USA tweaked their starting line-up. and were out. Chauncey Billups and Amare Stoudemire were in.
  • once again led the Americans with 28 points, including 16 in an impressive opening quarter. hit for 21 points, while and Dwight Howard each had 19 points.
  • Team USA struggled defending the three-point line; Mexico hit 15-of-28 from behind the arc. This has to be a concern. Outside shooting plays a huge part in the international game. Lesser teams, like Mexico, can hang with the Americans if they are given room to shoot and second chance opportunities.
  •  The United States faces Puerto Rico on Tuesday night.
