Steve Nash’s Thoughts On Phoenix Suns Signing D.J. Strawberry

“They (Tucker and Strawberry) are going to give us depth. They are going to give us energy. They are going to give us I think a better spirit, you know. Two guys that are happy to be there, busting there butts in lay-up lines and in practice. They are going to help the team,” explained Nash …

The Associated Press reports on the Phoenix Suns signing D.J. Strawberry:

The Phoenix Suns and D.J. Strawberry, their second-round draft pick, have agreed to a two-year contract that guarantees him a roster spot this season.

Strawberry, the 59th overall selection in the June draft, will receive the rookie minimum salary of $427,163 for the 2007-08 season. The second year of the contract is a team option.

The 6-foot-5 Strawberry, a former University of Maryland star and son of former baseball star Darryl Strawberry, played point guard in the NBA Summer League and could provide depth at that position for the Suns.

Last month, Steve Nash commented on Strawberry at his charity game held in Vancouver:

"Alando (Tucker) and DJ were great. We are excited to have them both. Two super guys. Great athletes. They play hard, they play the right way. Great teammates, so very exciting to have those guys."

"They (Tucker and Strawberry) are going to give us depth. They are going to give us energy. They are going to give us I think a better spirit, you know.  Two guys that are happy to be there, busting there butts in lay-up lines and in practice. They are going to help the team."

My Quick Take: Again, the Steve Nash Charity Classic was last July. Nash’s comments show that Strawberry has always figured in Phoenix‘s plans for the upcoming season.

I agree with Nash’s evaluation. It was just a charity run, but Strawberry impressed with his leaping ability and quickness. He’s a walking ESPN highlight reel, who could win next year’s dunk contest and even help the Suns.

The rookie also seemed like a nice kid. Strawberry accommodated fans and media, signing every autograph and giving interviews.
