Forget Medical Reports: Greg Oden Safe Pick For New GM Kevin Pritchard & Portland Trail Blazers

Sep 17th, 2007
Medical reports, a poor pre-draft workout, and Kevin Durant weren't enough to stop the Blazers from drafting the game's next great center. Fair enough. After all, you can't teach height and teams build around the five-spot ... The Oregonian reports on Portland GM Kevin Pritchard missing the warning signs that Oden could be an injury-prone player:

Still, several media outlets have published comments from unnamed front office personnel from the Eastern Conference that said they had red-flagged Oden's physical, which was taken at the league's pre-draft camp in Orlando, Fla., in early June. The inference in those quotes was that Pritchard and the Blazers should have seen Oden as an injury-prone player.

My Quick Take: Think back to when you started your first real job. It’s the first time you ever had any real power. And you are, as they say, wet behind the ear. During the first few months, you must make a major decision, which will impact your company's well-being for the next fifteen years. You can go two ways. You can make a smart, conservative choice or you can roll the dice and take a risk. What do you do?

This is the scenario Pritchard faced last June with the first overall pick. He was a new GM, so he lacked that Joe Dumars-Jerry West front office pedigree. He also knew his pick would determine the Blazers' future. So the former coach did what most of us would do-Pritchard went with what seemed like the smart, conservative pick in taking Oden.

Medical reports, a poor pre-draft workout, and Kevin Durant weren’t enough to stop the Blazers from drafting the game's next great center. Fair enough. After all, you can't teach height and teams build around the five-spot.

Bryan Colangelo, Toronto's current GM, used to run the Phoenix Suns. He signed Amare Stoudemire to a max contract days before the team doctors recognized STAT's microfracture injury.

Point being, these mistakes happen. Pritchard is in charge, so he should rightfully take the fall. But Portland's GM did what most of us would do in his circumstances-he played it safe. We should remember this before throwing Pritchard under the bus and feeding him to the lions.

Even if Oden was healthy it was the wrong pick. Durant is a STUD! Oden.. think Greg Ostertag. OK but not a tatlent like Durant. I don't understand some of the GM's. Carlos Booser was GREAT in college every year every game, yet he went second round. Most of the GM's are blind!

Kevin Durant Being a Stud is like saying shaq is graceful, hes really small(cant bench 185) and well get bullied for quite a while in the nba,Oden will be able to start his career(minus the injury) changing games with his ben wallace like attributes until his offense gets to a dominate level, and that Will happen, hes young, this is his first leg injury, and hes a fighter in general,he'll be back and he''ll dominate and then everyone will be saying how they were always riding that Oden bus... Much love to Oden-stay up bud

When both players have been in the league for 5 plus years, then we'll know whether KP made the right pick or not. Saying he made the wrong choice is reactionary and an insult to a very talented, young player. Injuries happen to everyone. Warning signs? Not being able to bench 180 lbs is also a warning sign!!

Yes, Durant is Kate Moss-caliber when it comes to his physique, but if that's the only issue you can find with his game, to me that seems like more of a compliment than anything else. Durant's game is infallible -- there really aren't any real weaknesses. Durant will bulk up and be a better player than Oden, no question. Pritchard did make a mistake, whether it was his first week or 10th year as the team's GM. Five year's from now we'll know for sure if he was right or not, but to me Pritchard made the wrong choice. He was worried that a few years down the line he didn't want to be know as the GM that didn't draft Oden, but unfortunately he'll be chastized the same way for not drafting a superstar, game-changing talent like Durant.

I think it is a little too early to make a judgement call on who should have been picked first. First of all, Oden is a freak of nature physically, as well as a class act. I am a blazer fan and I initially wanted the team to take Durant, just because I was concerned about Oden's wrist, however, after he was cleared "health wise" by Portland, Oden was my pick. Durant will be great, but Oden is the rare center who comes along only so often and can anchor the front court for years (assuming he stays healthy). With Roy, Aldridge, Oden and Portland's other young talent, the future is bright.

Kevin Durant is good, but his game is certainly not infallible. I won't waste time in explaining why the NBA is completely different from college, and how this is going to affect Durant. But in response to b4hoops, Pritchard made his choice based on who could take the Blazers to a championship, and that player was Oden, not Durant. Durant will enjoy many individual accolades, but he is not the player you build a team around. Whether he made the right choice, we won't know for at least five years. To say that either player is better than the other, when neither have played a single game is goofy.

ODEN will make it back and be an excellent addition to Portland! I believe Durant will do fine, but does anyone remember the expectations for Dennis Hopson. That said, Durant is no sure thing either. Although, I will admit, he looks damn close to one.

I think Aerosmith wrote a song about Durant. The title "Dude looks like a lady". He has the physique of a pre-teen swedish boy. He needs to hit the weight room A.S.A.P. His nemesis Oden, on the other hand is a beast! Not the most attractive character, but he can get it done defensively.

I agree with "Shake and Bake", Oden is a beast and will come in immediately and contribute defensively. Durant does need to "muscle up", but he will be good in time. The dude has game. I believe Oden will be the better of the two in five years, I also think Oden will let Durant polish his trophies when it is all said and done.

Wait a minute. To me, it seems like Durant would've been the safe conservative pick, and Oden the riskier, yet higher payoff pick.

I don't care if Oden has to take a year off, he will still be the player everyone knows he is capable of. This guy has been called a future HOF'er since he was in high school, and now people are dogging him and calling him a bust when he hasn't even played a game. Durant is going to be a future HOF'er too. I wish them both great careers, and hope Oden gets healthy so I can watch a great rivalry unfold over the next decade.

Absolutely. Durant was the safe, yet unpopular choice.KP said time and again he was a "high risk" guy. Oden is the high risk, high return player. And now you see why.

To the anonymous poster that responded to me, by calling Durant infallible I mean to say that he has no real weakness in his basketball skills. Yes, I concede, he is frail right now and that will cause him a lot of problems in his first couple of seasons -- particularly on the defensive end. But, the guy has a sweet outside shot, McGrady-like drives to the basket, a wide array of post moves for a player his size and position, can rebound like a maniac from the 3-spot and is a shot blocker. Oden on the other hand, is, and always has been, an amazingly athletic, coordinated and physical player for his height. And, of course he's great on defense -- though I think he'll be very much foul-prone his first couple of years playing. But, his offensive game needs a lot of work. Look, for me, it comes down to this in evaluating the two players head-to-head. Comparing them to other players in their respective positions, Durant's skills are a lot more NBA ready than Oden's. While Oden on the other hand is more ready physically, outside of the injured knee, than Durant. Physical prowess can be built in a gym in a relatively short time, but basketball skill, as you know, takes a long time to develop. I'll take skill over physical ability in this case.
