The Real Reason Michael Jordan Attended Charlotte Bobcats' Practice

Dec 19th, 2007
Jordan justified his presence at practice by saying he was trying to lift player morale. Most players, even the struggling Cats, aren't dumb. Jordan's really telling players to improve or he'll send them to the NBA's version of Siberia also known as Minnesota and New York ... It’s an ominous sign when your boss checks up on you. He’s either thinking about giving you that fatal pink-slip or pulling an Office Space and telling you to come in on Saturday.

Neither is good.

What if you play pro ball for the Charlotte Bobcats? How do you react when your GM, the great Michael Jordan, shows up at practice, dusts off his signature sneakers, and participates in practice?

Well, that’s exactly what happened today in Charlotte.

In an effort to get more involved with his slumping team, the Charlotte Bobcats' part-owner (Jordan) jumped into a drill during the team's practice. He then gave tips to some young players and showed he still has that famous shooting touch. (Associated Press)

Of course, Jordan justified his presence at practice by saying he was trying to lift player morale. But most players, even the struggling Cats, aren’t dumb. Jordan’s really telling players to improve or he’ll send them to the NBA’s version of Siberia also known as Minnesota and New York.

For Jordan, such threats are necessary. Forget that he spent a wad of cash to buy a share of the Charlotte franchise. After his D.C-debacle, Jordan’s reputation as an executive is at stake.

So far, #23 has come up short in North Carolina. He committed $124 million dollars on three players, Matt Carroll, Jason Richardson, and Gerald Wallace, who share two positions.

Now he’s traded Primoz Brezec and Walter Hermann’s expiring contracts to Detroit for Nazr Mohammed. Sure, Mohammed fills a hole at center, but he scheduled to earn 18 million dollars over the next three seasons.

With the way things are unfolding in Charlotte, Jordan should skip practice and just suit up for games.
