Andrea Bargnani Over Brandon Roy: A Blemish On Bryan Colangelo's RecordMy AM Take: Bryan Colangelo is a two-time NBA executive of the year. He rebuilt the Phoenix Suns and his skills in the executive suite kept the Raptors from extinction.

Questioning him isn’t easy. But sometimes it’s justified. For example, it looks like Colangelo took the wrong player first overall in the 2006 NBA Draft.

Yes, I’m talking about drafting Andrea Bargnani instead of Brandon Roy. The slight Italian has regressed in his second season, while Roy has become a franchise superstar in Portland.

Don’t get it twisted. Bargnani could still develop. However, troubling signs have emerged.

Young players, especially top picks, shouldn’t take steps backwards. But that’s exactly what has happened with Bargnani. This year, he’s averaging significantly less points, rebounds, and minutes than his rookie season.

Numbers don’t tell the full story, though. His confidence is gone. Bargnani is tentative on offense and a liability on defense. Lately, the Raptor coaching staff has grown impatient, playing a platoon of posts at the five spot.

Meanwhile, out west, Roy has blossomed into an All-Star and MVP candidate. His Blazers are rattling off the wins- without any contribution from their own first overall pick, the injured Greg Oden.

Like I said, questioning Colangelo isn’t easy, but in this instance it’s warranted.
