Defense Key To LeBron James & Cleveland Cavaliers Turnaround

I know. The truth can be hard to accept. Even for NBA superstars. But following Sunday’s Cleveland-Los Angeles game, LeBron James must accept his Cavaliers are best when focusing on defense. You see earlier this season, the superstar publicly questioned his squad’s identity as a defensive side. At the time of his statement the Cavs were suffering a nasty NBA Finals hangover.

Right now, they’re winning and once again looking like a contender out east. And getting stops is the reason for their turnaround.

Case in point: Sunday’s 98-95 win over the Lakers. L.A. had the final possession and a chance to tie the game with a three-pointer. But Cleveland’s defense double-teamed Kobe Bryant and the Lakers were unable to get off a shot.

Game over. Cavaliers win because of defense.

Anderson Varejao’s return from a nasty holdout has helped Cleveland rediscover their past identity. The Brazilian big has an infectious style, which alienates opponents and inspires teammates.

On the whole, the Cavs have won 12-of-15. In all but three games opponents were held to ninety-five points or less.

Sunday night was just another example of Cleveland’s stellar defense winning games-even if it’s hard for some to accept.
