True Contenders: Kobe Bryant & L.A. Lakers Pass Fifty Percent Rule With Win Over Miami Heat

As a basketball writer, I still use the fifty percent rule. In mismatches, I see if a top team can play an average game and easily handle an also-ran? Basically, can Goliath beat David without breaking a sweat? Last night, the L.A. Lakers passed my fifty percent rule by punching the clock and beating-up on the lowly Miami Heat at Staples Center ... True Contenders: Kobe Bryant & L.A. Lakers Pass Fifty Percent Rule With Win Over Miami HeatMy AM Take: Watching the Vancouver Grizzlies helped me. Yes, something positive came from Bryant Reeves’ girth, Shareef Abdur-Rahim’s follies, and GM Stu Jackson’s refusal to draft/trade for Steve Nash.

After watching the Grizzlies lose 60 games per season, I became skilled at spotting a contender. I called it the fifty percent rule. If a team could rest their stars, give extra time to their bench, play a so-so game, and comfortably beat Vancouver then they were a contender.

As a basketball writer, I still use the fifty percent rule. In mismatches, I see if top teams can put forth an average effort and still handle league also-rans? Basically, can Goliath beat David without breaking a sweat?

Last night, the L.A. Lakers passed my fifty percent rule by punching the clock and beating-up on the lowly Miami Heat at Staples Center.

Most of the signs were there. The purple-and-gold, after jumping out to an early lead, had some rough stretches, forcing perimeter shots and looking for highlight plays. But from tip-off to the final whistle, the Lakers were in control.

The minutes were pretty typical. Bryant still played most of the game, but reserves like Ronny Turiaf and Sasha Vujacic got extra burn.

Bottom line, L.A. showed their professionalism last night. Most teams can get up for a big game, but the league’s best keep their focus, don’t get distracted, and win mundane outings against cellar-dwellers like Miami.

Fans will remember the Bryant-to-Luke Walton-to-Lamar Odom highlight from last night. It was beautiful, a throwback to the Showtime era of the eighties.

But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. By coasting to a win, the Lakers once again proved they’re a team to be reckoned with.

for everyone jumping on the lakers bandwagon or folks already on it...dont forget who your superstar is. the under 47%, forcing shots when there's no need, able to lose focus of the team concept when challenged by another star, Kobe Bryant. This guy hasnt proved he can carry a team past the first round by himself yet. Dont forget these are regular season games youre watching now and not the playoffs. I used to be the biggest Kobe fan myself until Shaq and Phil exposed what kind of mentality he has. Wait till the playoffs and then we will see if there is any growth to this guy.

kobe is playing like a leader and shuold win the mvp and trust his teammates so hes not going to be trowing forced shots anymore he has to many good players to lose and he relizes that so i highly doubt that theyll lose in the first round or any round.

Kobe yes, he really is the best. I finally found a place where all the people love Kobe. Lebron, is third in my mind, right after Dawyne Wade. Lebron lovers are okay. But, he dosn't have enough history to compare to Kobe, get off his dick until Lebron does somthing actually.

"umm ok" can u name one ofther player who could carry a team by himself? lol and don't bother saying lebron james the east sucks! tell me one player ever in the history of the nba has been able to carry an entire team deep into the playoffs. lebron took his team to the finals going through the d-league. has anybody actually looked at the east. the 7th and 8th seed are held by teams that are 5 and 6 games under .500 are u kiddin me? kobe could take the miami heat into the playoffs in the east. reggie miller said that also last night. he said if u replaced kobe and d-wade the heat would be in the playoffs. " i used to be the biggest kobe fan myself" lol highly doubt that anybody who liked kobe back then would have known rite now what really happend. FYI kobe is the one player in the nba who will never ever be distracted by off-court issues. i can guarentee u that not a single player can call out their management rant about his teammates and tell the media that he'd rather play on pluto and come in opening night. with a sprained wrist and drop 45 points.

whether kobe deserves mvp or not is to be seen, cp3 is playing some amazing ball...but james is better than wade...wade is amazing, but not better than james, at least not this year...perhaps it's b/c wade has been playing injured all year...but regardless...no one can stop james when he decides he wants to take it to the rack...you see james vs the pistons last year? yea, thats rite...see james in the final moments of the all-star game? yea...the man is a monster...

Are you guys really an NBA fan or can understand basketball? KOBE is the best player ever to play basketball. LeBron is just a hype, leading his team to a very weak conference, and his team is even not w/in the top 8 best team in the NBA. Bring LeBron to the west w/ his current teamates and for sure they can never get into the playoffs. Its just,we can't accept the fact that the guy they say uncoachable & ballhog is the best player the NBA has. This year,KOBE should win the MVP because he really deserves it as well as the past 2 seasons... GO LAKERS..... KOBE 24 "Carpe Diem"!!!!
