James Posey, the new Robert Horry, deciding between Boston, Washington, New Orleans, & L.A. Clippers

Opponents can finally breath because Robert Horry will likely retire. After seventeen seasons, the forward leaves a legacy of game-winning shots, championship bling, and controversial plays. Ironically, as one clutch veteran gets ready to call-it-quits, another, James Posey, seems ready to assume the Mr. Playoffs mantle. That's right. 'Pose' is the new 'Big Shot Bob' ... James Posey, the new Robert Horry, deciding between Boston, Washington, New Orleans, & L.A. ClippersOpponents can finally breath because Robert Horry will likely retire. After seventeen seasons, the forward leaves a legacy of game-winning shots, championship bling, and controversial plays.

Ironically, as one clutch veteran gets ready to call-it-quits, another, James Posey, seems ready to assume the Mr. Playoffs mantle. That’s right. ‘Pose’ is the new ‘Big Shot Bob’.

Consider the evidence. Posey hasn’t hit many Horry style buzzer-beaters, but his toughness helped Miami and Boston win the Lawrence O’Brien trophy. During the playoffs, former coach and ABC broadcaster Jeff Van Gundy spent significant airtime praising his competitive fire. And contenders are looking like forty-year old cougars fighting for New Kids On The Block reunion tickets because they’re falling over each other trying to sign Posey as a free agent.

So where will he end up? ESPN senior basketball writer Marc Stein reports that Boston, Washington, New Orleans, and the L.A. Clippers are eyeing the lanky wing. Lets examine his options.

  • Celtics: The green-and-white want Posey back. But they have nine players under contract for next year at a staggering 72 million dollars and may have to let their valuable reserve walk for financial reasons.
  • Wizards: Posey would work in DC, but only if Coach Eddie Jordan stops entertaining with scoring and commits to featuring Caron Butler’s blue-collar defence. Posey, Butler, and DeShawn Stevenson would form a strong three-man rotation at the shooting guard-small forward spots.
  • Hornets: Looks good on paper, huh? Young up-and-comers Chris Paul and David West with a winner like Posey.
  • Clippers: This seems unlikely. L.A.’s other team are rebuilding their talent and brand after the Brand fiasco (no pun intended), so Posey will head elsewhere unless Donald Stern overpays by several million dollars.
Whererever Posey lands, opponents will hold their breath when he checks in. So, in a wierd way, the Big Shot Bob legacy will live on.

Where will Posey play next year? Boston? Washington? New Orleans? The Los Angeles Clippers? Get at us in the comment box below and come back to HoopsVibe The Blog for more NBA Tidbits. Image courtesy of photographer

Stay in Boston. Why is this CLOWN even considering other offers. In my mind, he should stay where he had success. This is where agents ruin pro sports. Plus, I think Paul is overrated. Yeah, I dropped it. What? Hit me with your thoughts.

Paul overrated? Who made you the expert? He has saved a franchise and been monumental to the rebuilding of the city of New Orleans in many ways...and Posey would bring N.O. one step closer to the championship.....so buzz off

I'd like to see Posey in New Orleans, personally. I also like the Horry comparison.

Hi Four Leaf Clovers and SLC Jazz, Thanks for reading and commenting. I must disagree with your take on Paul. In my mind, he's the best point guard in the world and many thought he was almost, if not, as good as KB last season. Right now, he's a touch better than D-Will, too. Although I love Williams' size and work with Boozer. Again, thanks for reading and commenting.

To say James Posey is the next Robert Horry is laughable. Posey's ring count is what? 2? And he probably has about 1/10 as many playoff highlights as Big Shot Bob. Please stop comparing the two. I have plenty more I could say, but why bother with such a pointless comparison.

Hi Chris, Thanks for reading and commenting. I'm not necessarily comparing them as much as I'm saying Posey could very well grow into having a Horry like career. Sure, he hasn't hit the buzzer-beaters, which I mention. But Posey is a tough vet like Horry. He's long, lean, and athletic like Horry. And contending teams line-up for his services-again, like Horry. He's already got two rings; more could be on the way. Watching the finals, I thought Van Gundy and Mark Jackson were going to die by how much props and praise they were heaping on him. Similarities are there and when it's all done, Posey could end up a key cog on several championship winning teams-just like Horry. How they contributed to those NBA Titles will be different, though. Thanks very much for reading and dropping your opinion. Please feel free to respond.

d-will's size makes him a better post defender vs bigger pg's..but that is really his only advantage over paul..paul is faster, a better scorer, better passer, and is way more active in the passing lanes on defense, and is much more clutch than d-will. d-will is of course a great pg and many have drawn comparisons to kidd, which makes sense..but paul is just a better pg and will probably remain so until his legs give...and while posey has the potential to POSSIBLY be like horry...he will never be as good has horry...but because, as oly said in terms of his size, ability, and skill set he is desired by many teams..but he just won't ever be as great as horry..he'll never fill that role...ever..it's too late in his career.

yeah, you are right mclutch. Paul is better than d-will. d-will might be compared to jason kidd but CP3 doesn't need the comparisons because he is better than kidd.

Posey to Washington would be interesting. The Wizards have to figure out if they're Arenas' team or Butler and Jamison's team first, though

Washington should get Posey, and the team should be ran through Butler, then Jamison, and then Arenas. That's when they have the most success

At the level that geniuses such as MJ, Magic, Bird, Cousey and now Chris Paul play the game, the game becomes a form of art. These players, plus a few others I have not named, bring highly honed skills but what sets them apart is spontaneous decision making in the fast flow of the game. Chris Paul is brilliant and he is brilliant because he is very smart and his synapses pop at a very fast pace. Posey will benefit from that brain and CP3 will benefit from Posey's braun. If Posey is wise he will go to the Hornets and the town of New Orleans will love James Posey.

I'm a Wizards fan...I would love for Washington to get the Pose dog but they won't pay the luxury tax, babe. They have - according to Ivan Carter (a very reliable reporter down at the Wasington Post) about 2.5 million before they hit the threshold. Posey is fishing for the full exemption ($5.9)...also, with all due respect to Chris Paul (he's awesome), Deron Williams owns that kid when the Jazz play the Hornets...PEACE

I think james posey should head to the l.A clippers. it seems like there going to be a good team next year. they probably going to inquire emeka and have him as center. so it will be baron davis, cuttino mobley, james posey, al thorton and emeka okafor that sounds like a good line up to me.
