McGrady, Artest, & Smith? Why Detroit is considering a major trade

After the loss, the Hall of Fame guard immediately fired Flip Saunders and hired Michael Curry. But changing coaches is an easy personnel move for executives; especially Dumars who frequently pink-slips sideline bosses. Changing his veteran core will be a tougher call. Few teams have a foursome as talented as Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, and Rasheed Wallace …

McGrady, Artest, & Smith? Why Detroit is considering a major tradeGossip communist Perez Hilton should forget surgically enhanced Hollywood socialites and focus on the Detroit Pistons.

After all, the typically quiet Pistons have produced the summer’s juiciest trade rumours. First, there was the Tracy McGrady thing. Then there was the Ron Artest thing. And today, there is the Josh Smith thing making national news on CNNSI Fan Nation.

A team source confirmed the Pistons did approach the Atlanta Hawks weeks ago about a possible sign-and-trade deal involving restricted free agent small forward Josh Smith, but said Sunday that the two teams haven’t talked in weeks. ( Detroit Free Press picked up by CNNSI Fan Antion)

Watch out Lindsey Lohan. You’ve got competition and his name is Joe Dumars.

Even though, he’s making headlines, Dumars, Detroit’s President of Basketball Operations, is doing what is right. He has a fiduciary duty to do pursue every possible option that can improve his team.

And improving is necessary. Last season, the Pistons once again came up short in the playoffs, losing in the Eastern Conference Finals to the world champion Boston Celtics.

After the loss, the Hall of Fame guard immediately fired Flip Saunders and hired Michael Curry. But changing coaches is an easy personnel move for executives; especially Dumars who frequently pink-slips sideline bosses.

Changing his veteran core will be a tougher call. Few teams have a foursome as talented as Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, and Rasheed Wallace.

Unfortunately, these All-Stars are also aware of their considerable gifts. Too often, they’ve coasted through big games. And despite posting impressive regular season records, they’ve lacked the focus to win a second NBA Title.

But acquiring McGrady, Artest, or Smith would mean trading one of the big four. So Dumars and the Pistons have a delimma. Do they stay competitive with their current team or swing for the fences with a blockbuster move?

Either way, the trade rumours will continue. And Detroit, Michigan will give Hollywood a run for its money.
