Lamar Odom as Sixth-Man gives L.A. Lakers best shot at NBA Title

Sep 21st, 2008
Enter the sixth man role. Odom can check-in and do whatever is needed. He can be assertive like with Miami. He can facilitate from the point-forward spot. Or he can dominate the boards with his lanky arms. But instead of being underused as a starter, he becomes the best player on an excellent second-unit ... Lamar Odom as Sixth-Man gives L.A. Lakers best shot at NBA Title

NBA news mixed with analysis …

Their news: Odom has discussed with the basketball staff the possibility of accepting a sixth-man role, which has all sorts of delightful possibilities to it, due to the 6-foot-10 Odom’s versatility.

He could come off the bench to play small forward or play the two position (shooting guard) or power forward. The Lakers’ staff even has discussed with Odom the possibility of him being a hybrid point forward and initiating the offense in that role.” (Orange Country Register, linked on HoopsVibe News Section).

Our Quick Analysis: Moving to the bench would have a positive influence on Lamar Odom and the Lakers. The southpaw suits the sixth man role perfectly.

L.A. is now built around three players: superstar Kobe Bryant, super-Spaniard Pau Gasol, and super-center Andrew Bynum. Odom, after years as second banana to Bryant, sometimes got lost as the third option last season and could struggle as the number four.

Enter the sixth man role. Odom can check-in and do whatever is needed. He can be assertive like with Miami. He can facilitate from the point-forward spot. Or he can dominate the boards with his lanky arms. But instead of being underused as a starter, he becomes the best player on an excellent second-unit.

Opponents would have to adjust their game plan to Odom’s new role. For example, teams try changing their line-up to slow San Antonio’s top reserve Manu Ginobili. They fail. And the Argentine still goes off and opponents, by adjusting, are off balance all night. Odom as sixth man would have the same impact.

Trevor Ariza is the likely choice to replace Odom in the first-five. The 6-8, 215 pound wing would inherit the stopper role from Bryant and allow the superstar to conserve energy on defense. And with Ariza starting, the Lakers are nastier than Janet Jackson on defense.

Odom as super-sub makes sense. The move would energize the talented three-man, give the Lakers a gunner off the bench, and unleash Ariza as a lockdown defender. Bottom line, L.A. would be closer to winning the 2008-09 NBA Title.

That's the dumbest thing I ever heard. Bringing him off the bench, he has thrived being the third wing with Gasol and it will only get better with Bynum back.

Hi Get Smart ... Thanks for reading. Thanks for commenting. He can still play with Gasol and Bynum, except now he gives them a different look as the main option off the pine. Ginobili is a real plus for the Spurs as sixth man. It would be interesting to see for LA, too. Thanks for yourvthoughts. Out ...

Ginobili is a spark player, he brings energy and flash. That's what 6th men do, they keep things in a flow. Odom is not that type of player. He is a get in the rhythm after a period of time player. Which makes his role as the third wing as a starter better off, than bringing him off the bench

I agree with Get Smart. Even big men like Antonio McDyess, and Robert Horry bring a spark off the bench. That's just not Lamar Odom's M.O. I think it's a bad idea having him come off the bench. I wouldn't do this, but if they wanted someone to come of the bench and provide a spark Gasol should be the one. But like I said I wouldn't do that either. Play them all as starters for while and let them get use to one another and see how it goes. You can't fix what's not broke, or furher you can't fix, what hasn't been created yet

seems like a good idea, but i doubt lamar will be coming off the bench. he is too much of a leader and a star to be given that role.

I agree with O. Sandor. Odom can be a sixth man averaging 30 minutes a game. There's nothing wrong with that. Lamar is not a star or even an all star.

I love the idea!!!I believe (Odom) he's one of the few players in La La Land who DOES not want their time in the spotlight. So this will work perfectly for him.Not to mention, the Lakers already boast one of the best benches in the NBA already. The addition of Odom would only bolster the defense and (especially fill the void left by the departure of Roni Turiaf) and bring fluidity to the offense.I still think he's the most versatile player in the NBA. He reminds me of players like Tayshaun Prince. I think for once he can prove he's not just a stat sheet stuffer but an integral part to the Lakers success. I do feel however that if Odom comes in with the second group, he needs to become more of a cerebral player. He has take guys like Farmar and Sun Yue under his wing. My only question with this team is Radmonovic. What role does he play? Three point threat? or Defensive Liability?I think we're going to need the preseason to figure this entire thing out.I hope the Lakers GO ALL THE WAY!golakers

Hi Get Smart and Royal Ivey ... Thanks for commenting again. Good points I agree Odom is more a flow player, while Ginobili brings a spark. For sure! However, Odom, at times, is known for getting lost on the floor when he's not getting touches. He tends to float on the perimeter and almost pout. I think back to some of his time with the Clippers and the start of his Laker days when he's adjusting to Kobe. As a number four, he could struggle. However, as a reserve, he becomes the main option? Something to consider? An adjustment in his style would have to occuer perhaps. Thanks for reading and great points!

The Lake Show needs someone at the three that can shut down Paul Pierce and the like... so Ariza should play with the first unit. Odom's scoring ability would indeed be wasted if he started.

i doesnt matter ii he starts or comes off the bench or if bynum becomes the the superstar everyone expects him to be. this will not compensate for the lakers lack of defenseand softness.

i think moving odem out of the line up would be stupied i think if they move him out of the line up they should put vujacic as starting shooting guard and move kobe as starting SF and fisher PG and Gasol PF and the big and bad Baby Face Bynum center or they can put bynum at the 6th man and put odem as the PF and Gasol as C and Kobe as SF Vujacic as SG and Fisher as Point guard but i think either way lakers are going to do a really good job this year all they haft to do is stay healthy we cant aford no injuries this year the bench really brings us alot of energy to the team but its going to be hard to cut the players off the roster when traning camp comes because theres alot of really good players on the roster and Mithch is going to haft to make the right decisions

Justin, I don't think Odom will mind. LOL! Thanks for commenting. I agree the Lakers are a power, with many options. I really like Vujacic off the bench, he brings energy. As a starter, he'd be good, but he is so eefective as an off-the-bench pest.

I think it's a good move to put odom as the sixth man. I mean he's the only starter in with the second unit when kobe, pau, bynum, and d-fish go the bench anyway.

I have my doubts on odom coming off the bench and becoming the focal point of offence. He doesn't show up mentally and more often than not, shies away from responsibility on the court. When he feels like scoring, he goes to his left on a drive. When he doesn't , he takes bad shots on his gross jumpshot. Someone like ginobilli is an attacker! That's why he's great off the bench. Odom? He's a "passenger"

Injured Ginobili and Joey the Cheater Crawford is what helped the L.A Lakers win against the Spurs. There is a huge question mark on the Lakers road to the FInals. Kobe is not good enough to win a championship. He is a selfish prick. Odom is useless, he is an overrated player. Manu or Ben Gordon are better tham him either as a third or fourth option or a bench sparker. The Lakers will not get lucky this time. Joey Crawford and luck will not bail them out.

ThaMamba 24 and LA Hustler, you guys are prick. Instead of swallowing Kobe's semen, why dont you accept the truth that the L.A Fakers got lucky against the Spurs. Duncan is a better player than Kobe the last 10 years and is by far much more accomplished than that rapist. The L.A Fakers is not good enough to win a championship and theyw ill never win a championship with Kobe as the leader because he is a sorry loser and is not good enough to win the ring. Both of you L.A morons can go to hell and tell Lucifer I said hi.
