How Bryan Colangelo fixes the Toronto Raptors

This season, the Raptors’ GM has seen his club fall out of the playoff picture and the future is equally uncertain. After all, Chris Bosh hits free agency in July of 2010 and if things don’t improve he’ll sacrifice the extra year and thirty million dollars Toronto can offer in a max contract and flee the great white north for a better situation. Then things get difficult. No Bosh. No credibility. And the Raptors revert back to Mickey Mouse status on and off court …

How Bryan Colangelo fixes the Toronto RaptorsThe shine has dulled on Toronto golden boy Bryan Colangelo.

And the Raptors revert back to Mickey Mouse status on and off court.

How can Colangelo fix Toronto so his franchise face will re-up for another max term?

  • They need defensive grit at the one-spot and down low. Andrea Bargnani has made strides, but can’t stop opposing posts. Jose Calderon, despite having an impressive assist to turnover ratio, gets beat off the dribble. Both get exposed.
  • The Raptors have to find a 2-3 man who can create scoring opportunities when the shot clock is winding down. Anthony Parker, Jason Kapono, and the newly acquired Shawn Marion fall short in this respect.
  • Increase the depth. Two years ago, they had one of the NBA’s best benches. Gone are valuable reserves like Carlos Delfino, Jorge Garbajosa, and Rasho Nesterovic, while holdover Kris Humphries has struggled. Improving the second-unit is a must.
  • Does he stay long-term or leave now? The sooner Colangelo decides the fate of coach Jay Triano, the better. The interim tag isn’t easy on Triano or the players. Making a decision will clarify the future.

Colangelo once rebuilt the Suns in a half-season. He needs to do the same with the Raptors. Or his golden boy reputation and the franchise he runs will be ruined.
