Dahntay Jones, like Raja Bell, making NBA bones guarding Kobe Bryant

Throughout the series, Jones has pushed, tripped, and pounded Bryant. His tactics, whether dirty or clean, have taken a toll one of the NBA’s premier players and helped the Nuggets surprise the heavily favoured Lakers. In fact, the last player who got in Bryant’s head like Jones was Raja Bell. A few years ago, Bell, then with the Phoenix Suns, jousted with Black Mamba on-court and in media scrums. Dahntay Jones, like Raja Bell, making NBA bones guarding Kobe BryantOnce again, Kobe Bryant is learning there’s a cost to getting yours in the playoffs.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ two-man has taken a beating in the Western Conference Finals at the hands of the Denver Nuggets, specifically lockdown specialist in training Dahntay Jones.

The end result was an entertaining duel to the death, or seventh game.

There are similarities between Bell and Jones. Both bounced around the league. Both employ a physical style. And both made their name and bones in the league guarding and antagonizing Bryant.

(Remember, the 2005-06 Western Conference Quarter Finals?)

Like Bell’s Suns, Jones’ Nuggets must come from behind if they want to advance to the NBA Finals. Tonight, the Lakers won game five 103-94 and now enjoy a 3-2 series lead heading back to Denver.

Bryant took some shots in the victory. They’ll be even more physical play in game six. Expect Jones to be the one delivering the punishment.
