Breaking NBA news mixed with analysis ... Their News: “Free agent forward Lamar Odom will return to the Los Angeles Lakers, an NBA source said Thursday.” (ESPN) Our Quick Analysis: Should Commissioner Stern give the Buss clan the Larry O’Brien trophy now and crown the Lakers 2010 world champions? Sure, Boston, Cleveland, Orlando, and San Antonio upgraded their roster this summer. And there are no guarantees in pro sports, but re-signing Odom to a four-year, $33 million pact positions the purple-and-gold to repeat next season. Odom is the game's most versatile player. He can start or come off the bench, play every position, and do any number of things well. For instance, last year, Odom joined the first five when Bynum was injured and, whether starting or coming off the bench, consistently scored, grabbed some boards, and created for teammates. Last playoff, former coach and current broadcaster Jeff Van Gundy called Odom a top thirty player. Alonzo Mourning’s former ankle-weight is right. Odom is an All-Star. Best of all, his skill-set complements a roster loaded with talent like Ron Artest, Andrew Bynum, Kobe Bryant, Derek Fisher and Pau Gasol. No team can touch the Lakers' first six. He is cheap. Los Angeles is not immune from the economic downturn, so retaining Odom for below market value saves the league's glamour club significant luxury tax payments. Going forward, they have some flexibility to add further players through trades or free agency. By keeping Odom, the Lakers have separated themselves from the pack of contenders. Barring a major injury or meltdown, back-to-back NBA Titles looks likely. Will Los Angeles repeat in 2010? What does Odom's return mean? i agree oly. lakers will be hard to beat. i think they will go to the finals and meet the cavs!the only possible issue could be mr artest and his temper. but as we know there is a 10 times nba champion coach on the gold and purple bench! so, what the hack, i know i will get burnt but i'll call it anyway: lakers are gonna win it in 6 this season! report abuse

allnet38, Don't forget that Phil Jackson held Dennis Rodman in check during his tenure in Chicago. Ron-Ron is bonkers, but he doesn't hold a candle to Dennis Rodman. report abuse

the Lakers could repeat. Phil Jackson is highly capable of controlling the temper of Ron Artest. the zen master have a history of coaching Rodman, Pippen, Jordan and Shaq. all have their own egos. report abuse

40 inch leaper is certainly right. Jackson, for several years, got Rodman to fit into the Bulls' scheme and excel. Ron Artest won't be an issue. Thanks for commenting. report abuse

Ron Artest is a huge upgrade over Trevor Ariza. The Lakers with Artest now have a power player that can heavily defend players such as Carmelo Anthony and Lebron James.Years ago, I wanted the Laker to trade Lamar for Artest. Now they have both! The Lakers now have a much better defensive team than last year's NBA Champion. report abuse

Essentially, the Lakers are intact with only Sun and Ariza gone. I thought Ariza was and is an excellent role player and played that role perfectly. He hit the open shots when he needed to and played excellent defense on other role players. What he could not do is defend the other teams go-to player. Kobe took that role many times. Now Artest takes that role and takes the pressure off of Kobe. Imagine Kobe cherry-picking cause he can guard the 4th option on the team they are playing! Saving all that energy for help defense and offense. Yes it all comes down to health - I am less concerned with chemistry since only Artest is new. Basketball is a game of match-ups. That is why the Cavs went and got Shaq - to match up to Howard. Man for man, it is hard to match up to the Lakers. Just too many weapons. With Artest, the Lakers finally have a bruiser -haven't had that since Rambis. It will be a fun season to watch! Can't wait till it starts! report abuse
