Derrick Rose vs. Greg Oden: Who’s the better number one pick?
Hey yo. Psst.
Derrick Rose is a better player than Oden? That can’t be. Right? RIGHT?
It’s beginning to look that way.
First impressions: Greg Oden has no post up skills. None whatsoever. It’s so lacking that it’s very disturbing; Ben Wallace-like. Even when Shaq and Dwight Howard first came in, they had some things.
Lebron’s grandfather has nothing on offense; very raw. The way he’s moving around the court is also discouraging. Too premature to judge just after a few minutes? I’m not sure. During those minutes, his positioning to crash the boards is bad and he couldn’t get a bucket if his legs depended on it. He has TONS of work ahead of him. I hope Portland pays the cash to get Hakeem Olajuwon to mentor the old kid for the next 3 years.
The injury that he sustained during his first game could happen to anyone. Upon watching the replay, anybody would have gotten injured in the same predicament. I’m not going to tab Oden as injury prone just yet. It just sucks. I will say that his first minutes of actual play was not encouraging. Dwight Howard looked better in his first few minutes of his first game during his rookie campaign.
Derrick Rose, however, came out with fire. He had a solid performance with 11 points, 4 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 steals, and 4 turnovers. Despite the 4 turnovers, it’s still a great sign. Then his second game against Boston, who has the best defense in the league, he attacked the basket with voracity. He finished with 18 points. He couldn’t get any assists because there are no other good finishers on the squad and he got into early foul trouble. If he didn’t get that, he probably could have scored 30 on his own. You can see Derrick Rose in shock sitting on the bench thinking "I can’t believe my teammates suck this hard."
Greg Oden is not a bust. I hope he’s not, but he has shown signs that he can be. Is his ceiling just a bigger superior version of Ben Wallace?
Derrick Rose looks like the real deal for now. His potential ceiling of Jason Kidd/Dwayne Wade/Chris Paul is a possibility.
The battle between the two number one picks is just beginning, but it’s interesting to see a true center competing against a true point guard.
