Pistons to Retire Rodman’s Jersey
With all of his off-court antics, it’s easy to forget that Dennis Rodman was an incredible basketball player. When his name is brought up, the memories usually involve his ever-changing hair colors, his romantic dalliances with celebrities, the wedding dress, the attitude, the piercings, the tattoos– everything but his on-court accomplishments. So it’s nice to see that the Detroit Pistons will be retiring his jersey in the spring, remembering his accomplishments on the basketball court and immortalizing his name alongside the franchise’s other great names.
It remains to be seen whether Rodman will be granted entry into the Basketball Hall of Fame. We’ll find out this weekend if he’s a finalist for the honor and the 2011 inductees will be announced in early April. Early speculation is that Rodman’s antics will stick in the minds of Hall of Fame voters and negatively influence what should be an easy decision. Rodman has a fistful of championship jewelry, was the best rebounder of his generation and arguably its best defender. Those facts may be overlooked by the Hall but, thankfully, the Pistons realize their significance. Hopefully their decision will make others remember the things about The Worm that truly matter.
Of course this argument is rendered ineffective if he shows up to the ceremony in a wedding dress. Play it cool, Dennis.
