Better Basketball: Better 1 on 1 Offense

Better Basketball Better 1 on 1 Offense
Better Basketball continues their excellent series of instructional DVDs with Better 1 on 1 Offense. An eight-chapter look at the facets of a complete one-on-one skill set, this tape delivers the quality advice that has made the previous instalments worth very penny. On loading the main feature, we are introduced to the basic concepts of good one-on-one play by legendary coach Rick Torbett, whose knowledge of the game and attention to detail make him the perfect man to impart the information that can benefit any player at any level.

Starting with a detailed breakdown of the mechanics of the triple-threat position, the tape aims at refining the fundamentals and introducing options of which a player may not have been previously aware. Such is the case when Torbett takes the simple act of receiving a pass with a defender running towards you and outlines how a nifty reverse pivot can be used to beat them before they manage even to set their feet. Similarly, we are shown how to decide whether or not a shot is advisable when square to the basket, and several tricks to create space when required.

However, far from merely analysing angles, spacing and footwork, there are segments which inform a player of which muscles are at work in certain key movements, and how it is possible to maximise your explosion potential. This may, on the face of it, sound overly scientific, but, with a few diagrams and brief video clips, there is more than enough explanatory material that even the most inexperienced of players could speed up their first step or sharpen their spin moves.

W
hile other tapes fall short in failing to show how these skills can be incorporated into your game, Better 1 on 1 Offense scores top marks in this area. In addition to the detailed technical instruction, the viewer is shown a variety of drills which can be performed alone or with teammates that bridge the gap between the screen and a real-life game situation.

A real bonus of this DVD is the appearance of Chauncey Billups, Rick Barry and Sue Bird. All three talk on their training methods and approach to the game, and by hearing what these wildly successful professionals have to say, you are given an insight into basketball success that you simply won’t find on other DVDs. Furthermore, they each co-host their own instructional session with Torbett in which they let the viewer in on a few of their secrets, from Sue Bird’s shot-fake to Chauncey’s crossover.

In short, Better 1 on 1 Offense is a DVD nobody committed to improving can afford not to buy. From the basic mechanics to advanced techniques, this tape covers it all, allowing any player to improve their offense with a little work. Pick it up for yourself and you’ll soon see how easy it is, with the right instruction, to make yourself a greater offensive threat.
