5 Reasons Why The L.A. Lakers Are 5-3

November 17 07

They’re not underdogs, but they have been a surprise. After a summer of dysfunction, the L.A. Lakers have silenced critics by posting a solid 5-3 record.

Their start is even more impressive when considering the circumstances and opposition. The purple-and gold have transcended the Kobe drama, shrugged off an ugly pre-season, and then beaten contending teams like Phoenix, Utah, Houston, and Detroit.

Even their coach had doubts. Laker sideline boss Phil Jackson admitted his team was awful in training camp and believed they would go winless for the first few weeks of the season.

So what gives? How has L.A. been so good?

  • 1) Derek Fisher has provided leadership. He’s averaging a respectable 12 points and 3 assists per game, but numbers only tell part of the story. Fisher’s greatest strength is his presence and ability to calm teammates.
  • 2) They’re deep. The Lakers have 12 legitimate NBA players, seven of which average at least nine points per game. Vlad Radmanovic, Farmar, and Andrew Bynum have been especially strong off the bench.
  • 3) Lamar Odom looks ready to become an All-Star. Last night, he dropped a mean 25 points and 15 boards on Detroit’s Tayshaun Prince. The lanky lefthander has loads of skill, but consistency has been a problem. The Lakers need Odom to continue being assertive and physical on offense.
  • 4) So far, Andrew Bynum has held his own averaging close to a double-double (10 points and 9 rebounds per game) in just 23 minutes of playing time. The youngster’s improved conditioning has helped his play.
  • 5) Kobe Bryant has been excellent. The disgruntled superstar has pushed aside the distractions and averaged 28 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Most importantly, his personal situation hasn’t been a burden for teammates.

What is the biggest reason for L.A.’s 5-3 record? Will the Lakers continue to compete or fall off? Get at us in the comment box below.

K-O-B-E- IS THE ANSWER. AS LONG AS HE STAYS LA WILL BE ABLE TO COMPETE WITH ANY TEAM. .

I think the Lakers are better than people expected. But it really shouldn’t be that surprising if you think about it. They have one of the greatest players in history in his prime in Kobe. Plus, they have a legitimate all star in Odom. Just having those 2 is enough to compete every day. Add to that an avg to above avg supporting cast and bench (see today’s Bulls game), and you have a decent team that can go far if Kobe stays. .

Like I have been telling throughout all these Lakers topics. They are a good team, thet can compete, our downfall is always injuries, if the team can stay healthy they can be in the mix all season long, I don’t care what yaw say, it has been proven the last few seasons. Everyone on the team is doing their part and knows therir role, that helps alot .

I don’t think they’re playing over their heads at all...Unfortunately, they’re playing with a roster that could radically change at any time, thanks to Kobe’s trade demand. We had a lot of young talent and momentum on this team last year before too many injuries to overcome trashed our season....That talent is even better this year...Too bad for us Laker fans that our "superstar" doesn’t share that opinion... .

Lakers are for real, Boston will see friday. This game will be a blowout for the winner. odom vs garnett even if odom plays well, bynum vs pierce big edge to Pierce but stats will be even and kobe vs allen no contest Kobe.Lakers have a good chance to bet boston .

The Lakers have depth. They don’t rely on any one player to win... no matter what the media tells you. As long as Kobe lets the rest of th eteam play with him, they will continue winning. .
