5 Trade Deadline Buyers: Boston, Cleveland, Denver, Los Angeles, and San Antonio

February 16 09

Every week HoopsVibe The Blog drops a basketball List for fans to weigh-in on. We call it ‘Listed’ …

The All Star game is done. Full steam ahead to Thursday’s trade deadline.

By week’s end, the NBA landscape could look very different. Two factors are driving player movement. First, almost all teams are freeing up salary space for the summer of 2010, either to re-sign their own talent or add a big name. Second, the poor economy has forced a review of all contracts. Most players are available; only a select few are untouchable.

Right now, it’s a buyer’s market. The league’s wealthiest and strongest are well positioned to add talent for a playoff run. In this edition of ‘Listed’, HoopsVibe The Blog is naming five contenders who could be even tougher come Thursday afternoon.

As always, read the post, form an opinion, and get at us with thoughts on the deadline’s five biggest buyers.

Boston ...

Their bench has fallen short, so the world champion Celtics are looking at backup forwards and point guards to replace P.J. Brown and Sam Cassell. With a top-heavy salary structure, new additions must have expiring contracts. Hopefully, GM Danny Ainge steers clear of the Stephon Marbury albatross.

Cleveland ...

One of the NBA’s deepest squads, the Cavaliers aren’t upgrading for this year. Instead, GM Danny Ferry is burning up his Blackberry in search of players to convince superstar LeBron James to ink an extension. But Ferry must be careful. The wrong move could wreck chemistry and influence James to head elsewhere.

Denver ...

Nene and Kenyon Martin have contributed to the Nuggets’ turnaround. Still, The Mile High City needs a legit seven-footer to compete with the Spurs and Lakers. Unfortunately, ownership will opt for a cost-effective veteran.

Los Angeles ...

The co-MVPs of the All-Star Game have been playing nice, throwing each other very public compliments. Here is the question: are Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant scheming on a reunion?

Well, the Lakers need a short-term fill-in for the injured Andrew Bynum. And the Suns, because of financial difficulties, are looking to dump salary. But moving a ‘max’ contract is complicated and convincing the Buss family to forgive O’Neal for his insults could be impossible.

San Antonio ...

Quietly, the Spurs have had another fine season. Even with their strong record, Gregg Popovich is looking to add more than blending, bench pieces. The rumour mill has them eyeing New Jersey’s Vince Carter and Detroit’s Rasheed Wallace.

What team adds salary and/or talent at the deadline? Boston? Cleveland? Denver? Los Angeles? Or San Antonio? Get at us in the comment box below or come back to HoopsVibe the Blog for more NBA Tidbits. Photo courtesy of y roc30.

i would have loved to see shaq go back to the lakers - the resulting championship would have confirmed what we all know - kobe minus shaq equals LOSER. .

No problem Oly. I was also thinking Cleveland is going to want something big for Bob as well. A trade that I would suggest would be Linas Kleiza and Johan Petro and a future 2nd rounder for him. Kleiza is young and could maybe have some upside but these days he’s just a spot-up 3 point shooter. This would also leave J.R Smith more minutes, which is great in my books. As for where I think Denver actually goes, I have many players I would like, but I’ll limit it for now. Ben Wallace, for his Defensive abilities and veteran leadership, not to mention he’s familiar with Chauncey, and the the NBA playoffs. I was also thinking someone offensive minded plus the defense, because Johan Petro and Birdman are really only defenders/rebounders, only one I could come up with there is someone like David Lee, despite him not being the best defender out there, but Birdman more than makes up for that with his otherwordly blocking ability. Cheers. .

San Antonio has too many wing players even if they get rid of Mason or Hill. Manu needs his touches and will not be able to get it with Carter. San Antonio should not do this stupid trade. The Spurs don’t have a single bad contract in their roster, that only says they are not stupid enough to take Carter’s huge undeserve contract. .

The Spurs are not dumb enough to get Carter’s bloated $36 million two years contract. He is not worth it. The expiring contract of Rasheed Wallace sounds better. .

The Spurs should sign Rasheed Wallace and get rid of Oberto, Bowen, and Finley which matches his contract. Then the Pistons will probably release Bowen, they should sign him back. Bonner is a natural four like Kurt and Oberto. They are all 6’10 or under, while Wallace, at 6’11 with a bigger frame than Duncan should be able to help in the middle. Carter is not fit for the disciplined and unselfish Spurs team. .

The spurs are ok now, all they need is a big man. Kurt Thomas is 6’9 and Oberto is 6’10. George Hill is a great prospect and Mason is a killer in threes. Getting rid of Bowen, Oberto, Mason, or Finley will jeopardize the Spurs chemistry tremendously. Carter is a scorer and the Spurs do not need him. They have Manu, Tony, and Timmy. All they need is a defenseive presence in the middle that can block or change players’ shots.. .

Spurs should not trade for carter

The Spurs do not need Carter. They have Ginobili and Mason. They need to get a real seven footer center so Duncan can go back to his natural position. .

That is a concern considering the NBA just guaranteed 175 million in loans to teams!! .

next year this time there will be a lot of teams wishing they had offloaded high priced talent.$100+ tickets and big tv contracts are a thing of the past.this "economic stimulus" plan is not a stimulus, even the dem controlled cbo said so. it’s just going to drive our economy further into oblivion.the players think their contracts are "guaranteed". yeah, by whom? an organization that could be in bankruptcy precisely because of those contracts, that’s whom. .

Hi Jack. Thanks for reading and your kind words. I love Side show Bob aka Varejao. He is one of the few players capable of influencing the game without scoring or touching the ball, The Nuggets, like most teams, could use that sort of player. I don’t see Cleveland giving him up unless they get something big coming back. But you are absolutely right: that sort of player would really help Denver. Thanks for reading ... Get at me with thoughts on this you like! .

Being a Denver fan, I have to agree with your analysis on us. Nene has had a career revival and K-Mart is showing us he can be one of the best defending 4-men in the league, and he has expanded his game massively. A good deal for us I think would be getting maybe Varejao, as he can play either position and is quite under-rated for his toughness, regardless of the flopping lol. Good article, Oly, I enjoy reading your blogs, keep up the good work my man. .
