After Denver: Allen Iverson ’The Answer’ for Detroit and San Antonio?

October 13 08

There is no chance Allen Iverson stays in Denver. If the Nuggets struggle, he gets traded for prospects/cap relief. If the Nuggets are competitive, he still could get traded because his contract expires in July. If the Nuggets keep him for the year, he leaves as an unrestricted free agent come summer.

One thing is certain: ownership won’t extend Iverson. The club is losing money and George’s Karl’s offensive experiment has failed, which means a rebuilding project is approaching. Expensive veterans, even talented ones, won’t work long-term.

The superstar understands the situation. The winds of change are about to blow in Colorado. His bags are likely packed; the realtor’s ‘For Sale sign is ready.

Any mid-season trade is temporary. Iverson, as an unrestricted free agent in July of 2009, can pick between suitors. Will he sign with a mediocre team for big money and first-option status? Or will he sign with a contender for less money and less shots?

Hopefully, Iverson chooses the latter. The tiny guard should offer to be the top reserve on an established squad. The critics, the ones who claimed he wouldn’t sacrifice or play within a team concept, would be silenced.

Detroit and San Antonio would be perfect for a slightly toned down version of ‘The Answer’. Both should look at signing him next summer.

The Pistons have gambled on temperamental stars before. In February 2004, they took a risk acquiring Rasheed Wallace and a few months later were rewarded with an NBA Title. ‘Sheed’ was the missing ingredient and the post’s behaviour has improved in Detroit.

Joe Dumars must consider the All-Star scorer. This summer, the Pistons’ head suit talked publicly about changing his club and Iverson would provide a Wallace-like jolt. The problem is Rodney Stuckey. A superstar sixth-man would hinder the prospect’s development. Stuckey, like all budding youngsters, needs minutes.

Go big or go home. That’s the Texas way. The Spurs should follow the state mantra and upgrade their core with the Georgetown alum. Iverson would make a great second-unit game-changer; his presence would push Manu Ginobili into the starting five.

San Antonio needs the tweak. The west has gotten better. Houston traded for Ron Artest, New Orleans signed James Posey, and the Los Angeles Lakers are expecting the Andrew Bynum-Pau Gasol combo to deliver. The black-and-silver could counter these moves by going fast in the backcourt with Iverson and Tony Parker (talk about a deadly combo off the dribble).

Gregg Popovich, Tim Duncan, and the Spurs would mesh with Iverson. The franchise’s four championships demand respect, while A.I. has been a model citizen with the Nuggets. Finally, ‘Pop’ is close with Iverson’s former coach Larry Brown, so he would do his research before making any commitment.

Like it or not, Iverson’s run in Denver is winding down. What happens next impacts his legacy. Hopefully, he joins a contender and we can again watch him in June.

San Antonio is Allen Iverson’s best chance at a championship in his final years. .

If my SPURS got ai on the team we would destroy the nba, win 2 or 3 more rings, I would have manu still comming off the bench & with TP,AI,BB,TD, and mister Oberto as starters the rest of the team will fit in just fine, that would be the smartest career move 4 AI 2 become a champ, and it wouldnt mess with his legacy at all and anyone that thinks other wise was probably dropped on there head when they were a baby!!!!!!! P.S the rest of NBA smile now cry later... .

now with all do respect to the living legend, the fact of the matter is the Answer is in his 30’s... why would San Antonio continue to waste their money on a VET who would only add to the already deadly offense that the spurs already has? putting A.I., tony, and manu on the same team would be like putting kobe and a prime d-wade together (its like a 12 yr old’s fantasy roster). the way i see it, the spurs should start living in the future and start investing in young athletes that will help them in the long run. for the sake of their semi-dynasty they shouldnt waste their time on a trade as impractical as iverson. .

Nothing, if they sign him as a free agent in the summer instead of trading for him at the break. So it’s a question of now or next year. .

having ai in sa would be a huge relief for tim, tony, and manu on offense..but who would sa have to get rid of to obtain him?.. .

As a detroit fan, I don’t think he fits us...Joe Dumars does not give up a piece unless it improves the team. I don’t see how Ivo can improve us when we have a similar up and coming Stuckey off the bench. So we’re not trading for AI. Signing him? maybe if he takes around 5mil a year, but i bet others will offer higher. Sheed’s contract is up that year, and we’re probably going to look for a big guy that would replace him. aka Boozer could be in the grabs. That won’t leave much money, considering we have to sign a decent backup for Tayshaun .

I think if he leaves he goes back to Philly. Him,Elton, and Iggy would be the answer to Boston’s big 3. .

Reports are Charlotte will pull the trigger this time around, now that LB is on board. He may be intriged to to play with LB again, and play for the legend. Charlotte may not be in top contention, but things are on the brink for them, and A.I. is the perfect asset. Robert Johnson has the money, it’s all about him wanting to do it, and he’s commited to building a winner finally .

I could see A.I. blending in well with Detroit and San Antonio because those are two great defensive teams that could hide his defensive flaws and neither team would suffer as bad when he gambled for steals. His fg% has shot up in Denver on a team that doesnt run any plays so I only imagine just how much more efficient he would be playing for a team that actually run set plays. The thing is I dont see him coming off the bench. He wouldnt be down for it and I cant blame him because at the age of 33, there isnt any noticeable drop off in his atheleticism or production so why should he have to come off the bench. Another team I could see him meshing well with is Orlando. While Orlando isnt as established as the other teams mentioned, Dwight Howard would without a doubt be the best big man A.I. has ever played with and in the east they would be automatic title contenders. Imagine A.I. and Dwight running pick and roll all game and or A.I. driving in the lane and either dishing to Dwight, kicking it out to Rashard Lewis and/or Turgolu, or getting the layup and/or foul to go to the free throw line. This is all hypothetically though and we’ll have to see what happens at the deadline or next summer. .

Iverson on the Spurs would be great. A neat twist to a very good team. .

If they sign Iverson, Detroit will give Stuckey 2 good mentor Billups for the defense and Iverson for the offense and I see Stuckey as the modern Iverson .

I think he would be good for San Antonio!!!....Especially seeing what San Antonio has "not" done in the off season.... But the thing is, what would San Antonio have to give up to get him?....Because a player of that calliber does not come very cheap!!...And I think Duncan, Parker and Ginobili are pretty much untouchable...I wouldn’t want to give up Bowen either if I was in the front office. He is a big asset to the team.....But only time can tell?...I am a SPURS fan so I am all for getting AI, but the untouchable players that I posted... I would not want to give them up for anybody...They are to valuable for this team to lose!!.... .

Hi Julien, Thanks for commenting. A trade is possible, but unlikely. A free agent signing is a better option for Detroit. But the Pistons, thanks to Joe D, have some young pieces. They have Jason Maxiell, Aaron Affulo, and Amir Johnson. I don’t know if Dumars would give 2 of those guys up in a trade, esepcially if Iverson becomes a free agent. But with Kwame Brown, they have depth upfront. The guy who is untouchable is Stuckey. Just thoughts. Thanks for the question. .

I remember Gary saying last month, he doesn’t think the Nuggets want to extend Iverson. I live in Oakland, Ca and I have heard some rumblings about a three -team trade with A.I. some how ending up on the Warriors sometime this season. I guess if Belinelli, B.Wright and other pieces are included to come to the nuggets it’s very well possible. Troy next time you talk to Gary ask him, on a scale of 1-10 what would be the interest level of A.I. becoming a warrior .

Hi Anthony, thanks for commenting. Boston is an option. However, the Celtics don’t need to take a risk quite like Det or SA. And Iverson, even though he is great, is a bit of risk because he must click with his new team. Boston can keep their current core and add more blending parts, while the Pistons and Spurs are really in need of more of an impact piece! Just my thoughts ... .
