After Tough Summer, Shaquille O’Neal, Dwyane Wade, & Miami Heat Should Rebound In 2007-08

October 01 07

Michael Wallace reports on the Heat’s tough summer for the Miami Herald:

Players typically don’t flock to Camp Riley — with the demands and rigors of its twice daily, grueling practices — early. But there was nothing typical about this offseason for the Heat, which opens training camp Tuesday in preparation for the franchise’s 20th NBA season. The ’’full house’’ at the practice facility in recent days might be a sign the Heat is eager to put behind a bad offseason, one of the most difficult Riley said he experienced in three decades of NBA coaching.

My Quick Take: It has been a rough stretch for the Heat. After an up-and-down regular season, Miami failed to re-group and got swept by Chicago in the first round of last year’s playoffs. The summer was worse.

The team couldn’t sign any notable free agents because they lacked cap space. Dwyane Wade ’s rehab stalled. Antoine Walker was the victim of a scary home invasion and Shaquille O’Neal separated from his wife of six years.

So there’s only one way things can go-up. I expect the Heat, if healthy, to rebound from last year. And having the vets show up early to training camp is a great sign. It’s a sign of focus, something that has been lacking.  After all, Miami’s was too arrogant last year after winning an NBA Title in 2005-06. Their Larry O’Brien hangover lingered all season and they ended up getting exposed by the Bulls.

I still think they need an athletic scorer, preferably someone who can play defense, too. But the Heat, even without a third star, should be much improved in 2007-08.

How do you think Miami will do in 2007-08? Get at us in the comment box below with your thoughts.

SHAQ WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE IT THROUGH THE YEAR WITHOUT ANY INJURY, FACE IT HIS TIME HAS COME AND GONE. IF THE HEAT ARE DEPENDING ON MOURNING TO CARRY THEM THROUGH THAT STRETCH WHEN SHAQ GOES DOWN THEY ARE LIVING IN A PIPE DREAM...ZO AND SHAQ ARE ONLY ROLE PLAYERS NOW, THE UP AND DOWN THE COURT FOR THIRTY PLUS MINUTES WILL PROVE THIS...WAIT AND SEE...THE HEAT WILL NOT COME OUT OF THE EAST TO PLAY THE SILVER AND BLACK IN THE FINALS...THE HEAT SHOULD HAVE MADE SOME BETTER MOVES DURING THIS PAST SUMMER...TOO BAD! .

i’D RATHER HAVE A GROUP OF EXPERIENCED VETERANS WHO HAVE WON A CHAMPIONSHIP UNDER ONE OF THE GREATEST COACHS IN THE NBA. D WADE WAS INJURED IN THE FINAL MONTH OF THE SEASON AND NEVER FULLY RECOVERED DURING THE PLAY-OFFS THAT WAS PART OF THE REASON THEY LOSS. YOU CAN’T REPLACE A SUPERSTAR LIKE HIM HE’S THE BEST AT HIS POSITION. THE HEAT WILL COME OUT OF THE EAST IF THEY STAY HEALTHY AND PLAY SMART. .

energy971 your so f-----retarded. Wade is one of the top players in the NBA without a doubt, if they can win the ship two years ago theres no reason they cant do it again with wades experience .

I think the Heat will do well this year. Everyone thinks wade is the key factor but a determined Shaq is a lot to deal with. True he is not the force that he once was and Im not saying that he will make it to the championship but the Heat will either be on fire or burn down around Shaq! The heat should try and move williams and Simien ,Doleac and cash to the Sonics for Ridnour and kurt Thomas. I The sonics have been trying to trade Luke all summer and J. will would be a great vet to have around Durant,West and Wilcox. Kurt thomas would really help the heat on the board especially with walker staarting at the three Spot. .

It pains me to say it, but I think the Heat are going to bomb in the upcoming season. Even if the players are focussed, I think the most the Heat can hope for (and this is optimistic) is a repeat of last seaon. The real problem I think is this sign that the Heat have hung outside their locker room..."Give us your tired...your poor...your "young at heart." When did the Heat beome the retirement home for old washed up veteran players. .
