Agree or Disagree With NBA GMs: San Antonio Spurs 2007-08 Champs, LeBron James MVP, & Kevin Durant ROY?

October 24 07

Last week, GMs were asked to pick the 2007-08 NBA champion, Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, and best coach. The results of their survey were recently made public.

Every second Wednesday, HoopsVibe The Blog lets readers become NBA executives and make decisions like an actual GM. This feature, known as Wednesday GM, is popular because most fans think they can replace the suit ruining their favorite team.

In this edition of Wednesday GM, you’re commenting on the execs’ pre-season selections. So settle into your new front office gig, read who the GMs picked in their annual training camp survey, and give us your thoughts in the comment box below.

1) 2007-08 NBA Champion: Spurs

  • 37% San Antonio
  • 26% Phoenix
  • 15% Dallas
  • 07% Detroit

Analyzing Their Selection: GMs are playing it safe picking Tim Duncan and the Spurs to repeat as champs.  But Phoenix, Dallas, and Chicago seem poised to take the next step, while other squads-like Boston, Detroit, and Houston- hope their off-season leads to an NBA Title.

2) Most Valuable Player: LeBron James

  • 30% LeBron James
  • 22% Tim Duncan
  • 19% Kobe Bryant

Analyzing Their Selection: Many players are worthy of MVP consideration. For example, the last three MVPs, Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash, and Kevin Garnett, didn’t receive much love from the survey. The GMs pick makes sense, though-Cleveland is missing Sasha Pavlovic and Anderson Varejao, so James has to play like an MVP for the Cavs to match last year’s success.

3) Rookie of the Year: Kevin Durant

  • 92% Kevin Durant
  • 04% Al Horford
  • 04% Rodney Stuckey

Analyzing Their Selection: GMs see Durant as a shoe-in for Rookie of the Year. Horford is NBA ready, but he’s sharing minutes with Atlanta’s other talented bigs.

4) Best coach: Gregg Popovich

  • 73% Greg Popovich
  • 15% Jerry Sloan Analyzing
Analyzing Their Selection: GMs believe Popovich is the league’s top sideline boss. He’s brilliant, but picking best coach is similar to picking MVP-you can go in many directions.

im not attackin lebron cuz he’s a great player but don’t forget lebron got to the finals from the east he had to take care of one good team and that was detroit. He was a monster in that series. The teams in the west always have a tougher time gettin to the finals. If the lakers had a shot at gettin there they’d have to face the mavs, spurs, and suns who are a way better team than detroit. .

in 2005 lebron put up 31, 7 and 7 and carries the cavs single handledly!!! its gonna be that way for a while now because the management are shit! every other MVP contender has sum1 or sumbody who helps them. kobe had shaq and now has odom plus one of the greatest coaches in phil jackson. nash has marion and STAT. dirk has josh howard and the deepest team in the league. now im not sayin lebron should get MVP but dont attack him personally when its the media who are kissing his ass! and besides lebron has another 10 years to get his MVP and hopefully a championship... i just hope he doesnt end up like the oldies in miami who came purely for their championship... .

i think it’s halarious how year after year the media really wants to feed lebron the mvp award. 2 years ago everbody said he’d have an amazing season(which he did he’s a great baller) last year everybody said he’d get it again and he didn’t and now they’e saying he’s gonna get it this year. Lebron is a great baller but it pisses me off how other great players are overshadowed b/c of the media bulls---bias votes. in the 2005-2006 season i was perfectly ok with steve nash winning mvp. But the fact that kobe finished 4th!, behind lebron and nowitzki, lebron being second it just shows how the media wants to feed the mvp award to lebron they need to chill out and give it to him when he deserves it. .

Belinelli is going to be ROY, mark my words. Durant is fragile, as we have already seen, and belinelli is going to have Nelli is going to give all the chances in the world to marco. ROY = BELINELLI .
