Allen Iverson not The Answer for Charlotte Bobcats

April 25 09

Allen Iverson needed a ‘Just Visiting’ sign.

The former MVP recently set off the rumour mill when appearing in Charlotte on personal business unrelated to basketball. Hoop heads immediately linked the high scoring guard, who becomes an unrestricted free agent in July, to the up-and-coming Bobcats.

On some level, this appears a fit. The former MVP has a relationship with coach Larry Brown from their days in Philadelphia. And Iverson, even on the downside of his career, could theoretically sell tickets in Charlotte.

However, GM Rod Higgins was quick to dismiss the visit saying “I’ve never seen him here” and “if he’s here, it has nothing to do with us” (Charlotte Observer via CNN SI).

Hopefully, this is a sign. And the club realizes ‘The Answer’ is wrong for Charlotte and pass on his services. Here’s why:

After years of being a league outpost, the Bobcats finally gained an identity down the stretch as a balanced club. Say what you like about nomad sideline boss Brown, but Mr. ‘Play the Right Way’ obviously helped Gerald Wallace, Emeka Okafor and others develop.

Iverson would kill momentum. After all, he still views himself as a first option, which means unlimited shots and touches. This isn’t 2001. Iverson, despite posting numbers, struggled to win in Denver, while Detroit was a disaster. His shot-first style would disrupt the progress of this young team.

Money will also be an issue. The small market Bobcats are notoriously thrifty and their owner, BET founder Bob Johnson, hoards his 106 and Park fortune. With the salary cap likely decreasing and Charlotte’s corporate community suffering from the economic downturn, re-signing Ray Felton will be difficult.

Of course, Iverson will likely demand top dollars because he believes this will help re-establish his star status. But Johnson and minority owner Michael Jordan will not offer anything near a max contract. The mid level exception would be a stretch.

Fans should ignore the rumours. Iverson won’t end up in Charlotte.

listen everyone whos is hatin on a.i. look at his stats he has put up hall of fame numbers ... so has michael jordan and no im not comparing the two just using a relation, if a team played one of the greatest ever michael jordan 18 or told him to come after the bench after starting in nearly every game in his career for 12 years that he would be upset ? and being replaced not by a great player but will bynum thats not his ego thats his love for the game speaking knowing he was and is still one of the greatest players to step on the court and he ha-------taken less shots when he was with denver and still averaged the same numbers so he is giving up shots and not forcing like he could so anwhere any team that will play a guy of his caliber would benefit from him and i think he needs to go back to philly. .

Why are all yall speaking negative about iverson? He didn’t mess up with the pistons.the pistons were too imature to handle iverson.those little babies couldn’t play with him.they couldn’t adjust to him.if they were champions the way they say then they could adjust to anyone even iverson.iverson is only 34 and that is not old.even if it is old for the nba he’s still one of the best.age means nothing.he still plays the same.stop bashing iverson he’s not god but if u all keep putting him on a petistal then he will fall cuz he can’t be anybody but himself.and as far as him with the cats.he needs to bring this team up and the city of charlotte.charlotte needs excitment. .

Well at least the Pistons maid it to playoffs because of A.I the thing I think trading Okafor for someone better for someone better like Andrew Bynum orMemhet Okur would be better. .

Coach Brown will have no part of this.Even the best player slash worst NBA executive takes a pa-------on this one.Everyone knows if Joe D.got burned, stay away.Detroit would have won 50 with a chance to contend in the east had this move never came about. He’s done.Look what Denver has become without him.He will never own a ring, unless he becomes a contenders 7th or 8th man.We all know he is much too selfish and egotistical for that.Perhaps,he can concentrate on his rap career now. .

Lock the door. Do whatever you must to keep his guy out of N.C. He sucked the spirit out of the Pistons. Stop even talking about Allan Iverson. Let him go to Europe. .

Iverson’s just too old. He was nearly unstoppable in his prime but that cant be his style of play anymore .

Hi Sosa1 ... Thanks for commenting and reading. I don’t think the interest is mutual. The Bobcats have their own agenda and players to keep. And, after struggling in Detroit, I don’t think Iverson just gets what we wanted. His status has taken a hit! .

Yes, Iverson is not that answer for Bobcats as well. For Iverson, it might be Answer to his problems. His former coach who gave him the first MVP trophy and led the team to the NBA Finals. He could be the star he wanted to be since there is no superstar to share the ball in the lala land of Bobcats. However, considering the fact that Bobcats can actually make the playoffs by tweaking little bit here and there, there is no reason for Bobcats to push the reset button. The true Answer to A.I’s problem is within himself. It’s time to accept the fact, and move on to the new glory that awaits him .
