Amare Stoudemire Is A Great Talent, But Still Not MVP Great

March 18 08

My Quick Take: Great players win through making those around them better, great talents worry about getting recognized and talk to reporters about respect.

Right now, great players such as Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, LeBron James, Tracy McGrady, and Chris Paul are only focused on the playoff race.

Yesterday, a great talent like Phoenix’s Amare Stoudemire made national headlines complaining about being omitted from the MVP race.

"I don’t know what it is. I hear everybody’s name mentioned as far as the top players in the league. My name is never up there. It definitely hurts because I put in the work and the time and the effort to be an elite player. But my thing is just to keep improving. Whether they notice it or not, my teammates notice it, my coaching staff notices it, and we’re winning ballgames." (Arizona Republic)

See the difference? On the one hand, STAT has a point. Perhaps, his fine play of late has been slept-on. On the other hand, true MVPs aren’t lobbying the media during the stretch drive for props like a Democratic or Republican candidate in the upcoming American election.

To be fair, the All-Star forward has made strides. Early in his career, he was known for being self-absorbed, but recently he’s become more of a team-first star.

Still, if Stoudemire wants MVP love, he must use his athleticism to become a terrific rebounder and defender. That’s what a great player would do.

thers nothin wrong with beong self absorbed, thats what makes the player sometimes. there are past mvps who were self absorbed though. look at shaq. he won the mvp award even when he was fighting with kobe for the spotlight. amare definitley deserves consideration becuase hes been playin good bball. its hard to say he is an mvp with guys like shaq and nash on his team. if he can do this on another team and win games he should be up there .

amare doesn’t even play consistent defense! he’s just an all-star, but not mvp star! .

that’s why he is not been in the mvp race because he is self-centered! he thinks of personal accomplishments rather than team accomplishments! i mean, have you ever seen a player named MVP (jordan, bird, garnett, shaq, nash & etc..) being a selfish one? no! that’s why kobe never had that chance to be a mvp contender, until now... and as soon as stoudemire realizes that, he can’t be mvp! .

Get this straight: Amare IS NOT good ONLY because of Nash. If you even pay ANY attention to ANY of the Phoenix Suns basketball games, you can see that he creates his own shots as well. His jumpshot is so pure for a big man (obviously not as good as Dirk’s, but it’s still good for a PF/C), and he’s one of the best finishers in the league. He can block shots, and although he maybe unintelligent at times with his fouls, he’s still a great all around player and deserves some sort of mention. .

amare sucks...without nash he’s nothing. what the f-is wrong with phoenix players like marion and amare complaining all the time...take my word, in a season or 2 amare will be inching towards nothing when nash will be on the decline .

he’s right. I canot fathom that the reporters covering the NBA never ever mention Amaré as a potential MVP when his performances as of late have been nothing short of spectacular, overshadowing Shaq’s addition to the suns’ roster. on top of that he is a great showman, fearless, goes for a dunk as a first option when getting the ball in the paint. Good ball handling skills. He’s second best to Lebron this year if you ask me. I am a huge kobe supporter but his play over the last road trip has been erratci. Yesterday’s game at dallas saw him totally vanish down the stretch. People compare Kobe to Mj. Mj could have a flat shot for most of the game but he usually dominated the fourth despite all the double & triple teams in the world. Give Amaré the credit he deserves. .

MVP?? You must be kidding me!! Amare’s good only because of Nash. He’s hardly dominant like real MVP contenders like Kobe, TD or KG. Let him be included in the race. He’ll be the lowest vote getter anyway. .

AMARE is right he should be at least in the top 10 of the MVP race ... if he is not with phoenix ...phoenix wont with with a lousy old shaq... he even got an injury that even made him miss 1-2 seasons... but what is he doing right now... he is trying all his best to win win and win... he’s an overrated player for some guys but the truth is he is an underrated player... .
