Andrei Kirilenko Can’t Play In Europe, Can He Return To Utah Jazz After Deron Williams’ Comments?

September 23 07

He can’t quit on his $63 million contract and escape to Europe. And, after comments from his starting point guard, he might not be able to return to the Jazz’s dressing room.

Welcome to Andrei Kirilenko’s world. In case you missed it, the stat-stuffing forward has put himself in a tough spot. A few days ago, he publicly requested that the Jazz trade him-even threatening to walk on his ’max’ NBA contract and play for a club side in Moscow.

Hold on AK-47. Contrary to what the Russian forward thinks, the Jazz own his FIBA rights, so Utah would have to grant him permission to play for Moscow or any other European team. That’s not happening-ever.

So Russia is a no. But returning to the Jazz just got a little more complicated. Deron Williams, the team’s star table-setter, blasted Kirilenko through the media.

"You see Booz after practice shooting for 25 or 30 minutes. You see Memo shooting for 20 minutes. You see, you know, all the rookies. The young guys. You saw [Rafael Araujo] in there working. [Then] you see Andrei being the first one out the door."

"If he’s (Kirilenko) coming off a screen on one side and Matt [Harpring] is coming off a screen on one side, who do you think you’re going to pass to?"

"You think you’re going to pass to the guy you see working every day in the gym or are you going to pass to the guy who never works on his shot but yet wants to shoot ’em every time?" (Salt Lake Tribune, Steve Luhm)

To be fair, Williams said he would welcome Kirilenko back. And as point guard he had to get his teammate the ball in positions that suited his game. But the Team USA back-up finished his interview by questioning Kirilenko’s work ethic.

Williams’ comments could very well be true. And, in some respects, it’s a positive that he wants to speak publicly as team leader. But this is a case of wrong place, wrong time. Nothing is gained by complicating the situation with controversial comments, especially when dealing with an overly-sensitive teammate.

After all, AK-47’s issue is his role. The Russian wants to be The Guy. And Williams told the media that won’t happen.

"I love Andrei - like him as a player, like him as a person. He can definitely be a special player for us. But he’s not going to average 20 points a game." (Salt Lake Tribune, Steve Luhm)

Again, Williams didn’t mean any harm. I just don’t think he was careful with his words. And that has made things worse for Kirilenko and the Jazz.

Should Williams have commented on Kirilenko’s trade request? Get at us in the comment box below with your thoughts.

Deron Williams proved that he is not a leader. Real leaders know how to approach certain situations and i believe that he shouldve handeled it better .

I agree with Deron Williams 100%.... Kirilenko has 63 million left on his contract and he’s talking about walking away from it? Are you serious?! Before he signed that deal he was an all-star, an ABSOLUTE DOG on defense with a developing offensive game and arguably the best 3 man in the league (arguably!!). What has he done since? He doesn’t even look like the same player on the floor nightin and night out. .

First and foremost Williams made a big mistake by calling out his own teammate in public. Those are thing you do behind close door. Secondly who is Williams one good year does not make a career and with Fisher gone and AK47 soon to follow who will pickup the slack. Especially on the defensive end when Williams man is constantly getting to the basket and AK47 is bailing Williams out by blocking his shot. Who on Utah roster can intimidate down low like AK47 does. The Jazz are a team in turmoil and with no Fisher and inexperience point guard that dont know how to deal with other teammate behind close door the recipe for bad season is being set. .

Nah D-Will had the right to say that. First of all AK-47 is crying saying I want to be the star and he’s not putting in work for it. He needs to slow his role n play in the offense n shut the hell up. D-Will said those things because he keeps complaining yet he doesn’t works hard for it. Leaders call their teams out...what did Larry Bird do when he first met Magic in the Finals...called his teammates out n they won because of that(know your history). Good leaders keep their teammates in check. .

bobbo you’re a clown. To say that is racist is crap. You’re the only one who said that. AK is a soft player mentally and physically, regardless of where he is from or what he looks like. I was shocked when they gave him that a large amount of money and I knew it could back fire eventually. That time may be now and I would be looking for ways to unload him ASAP. He is not built to run with a team like this, the kid is on an island of his own. WIlliams all but clarified that with saying how he is the first one out the door. He’s mad cuz he ain’t the top option and ain’t gettin his way, so know he wants to take his ball and leave. Turnin down $13.7 mil a year because you can’t play with the big boys is a cop out. If only he showed the passion that he did in the Euro games, this wouldn’t even be an issue. .

I cannot imagine Jason Kidd or Steve Nash calling out an unhappy teammate...and I cannot believe the Jazz are thrilled either. The Jazz may very well be forced to trade him and Williams’ comments have just diminished his value. As for Kirilenko being "soft" that is a bunch of crap and subtly racist. For years, the rap against Europeans is that they are "soft". It’s a word that has no real definition but a derogatory comment. .

Both players need to check themselves, before they wreck themselves .

AK-47 is SOFT physically and mentally. He had one all-star season, and never shoul dhave been given max money. I agree with D-Will’s comments it was the truth. However he could end up like AK, in the sense of having a good season than falling off and having trouble staying consistent. I don’t see it happening, but anything is possible. Once he’s had multiple good season’s than I think he could be in a better position to call sometone out in the media .

WIlliams is wrong. Last time I checked he only had one good season. He needs to check himself ... .

I think it’s just honesty. Deron’s comments were by no means intended to make the situation worse unless AK chooses to make it worse for himself. .

Both need to shut up. AK is a jerk for demanding trades from the other side of the world and not doing it at the end of the season. Now nobody wants the nut case. .

Williams is trying to force AK to walk from his $63M so the Jazz would have room to sign him the max next year. Everyone can see this and Jazz can see this. Jazz hate players go out to voice in the public and trouble is it’s their PG. Hot potato, hot potato. Luckily it’s off-season, their wouldn’t and can’t take action. Williams is telling Sloan, his current and future teammates: "Don’t mess with me, or you’ll pay for it and you’ll not touch the ball in 40min. Haha...." .

Williams should shut his mouth. leaders can’t call out teammates ever. It’s not right. it’s not fair. .
