Best of the rest free agents: Where will P.J. Brown, Juan Dixon, Mike Finley, & Jannero Pargo sign?

August 13 08

The names got their money weeks ago. Right now, leftover free agents are desperately searching for a contract, knowing their leverage decreases the longer they stay on the open market.

It’s different for GMs. Early July, when free agency hits, is crazy. Front office suits play Ari Gold and throw small fortunes at the best available talent. Come August, those same clubs scour the bargain bin for cheap veterans or slept-on prospects.

That said several players could be of service. Here’s a look at the top leftover free agents and where they’ll end up.

P.J. Brown

Strengths: The wily post was great for the Celtics during their championship run. Brown can defend, rebound, block shots, and, very occasionally, nail a big jump shot.

Projected salary: veteran’s minimum.

Potential homes: He’ll only suit up for a contender. And Brown could stay on the sideline until mid-season; after all, Boston pulled him out of quasi-retirement last spring.

Juan Dixon

Strengths: This combo guard always stays prepared regardless of playing time. He also stretches defenses with his range and brings toughness to the second-unit.

Projected salary: veteran’s minimum.

Potential homes: Dixon will be a last minute depth addition to some team’s bench.

Michael Finley

Strengths: Every club can use a former All-Star with an outside stroke and great size. ‘Fin’ also has championship bling and a professional attitude.

Projected salary: veteran’s minimum or half the mid-level exception.

Potential homes: Re-signing with San Antonio is an option. Contenders like Detroit and Boston have interest, too.

Jannero Pargo

Strengths: Pargo is instant offense. The spark plug can score from the one or two spot, which makes him an ideal third guard. He’s a potential sixth man of the year.

Projected salary: slightly more than half the mid-level exception.

Potential homes: Last week, San Antonio was the front-runner, but Phoenix and New Orleans are also possibilities.

I believe that Dixon’s training the last few years at the 1 position by Calderon, Ford, Billups and Hunter, make him more valuable now than Pargo as a combo guard. Although he is small, he at least attempts to play defense, something foreign to guys like Pargo. But thanks Oly, good read. .

Hi. Thanks for reading and commenting. Just to clarify Gordon is a restricted free agent, meaning the Bulls can match any offer he gets from other teams. So his status is different than players on this list, and that is why he has not been included. Thanks for reading! .

Ben Gordon’s jumper looked broke at times, and without that he is a tiny little 2 guard that cant rebound or defend. .

I agree. I think the Suns could really use Pargo. He can play two positions and has a lot of moxie .
