‘Big Baby’ Problem? Could Glen Davis-Kevin Garnett incident impact Boston’s season?

December 06 08

Breaking NBA news mixed with analysis …

Our Quick Analysis: Last night, Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis lived up to his nickname. Literally. Yes, a grown man was crying on Coach Rivers’ bench.

The Celtics had a comfortable fourth quarter lead over the Blazers, so the second-unit was getting playing time. Reserves, like Davis, weren’t meeting superstar Kevin Garnett’s expectations. During a timeout, ‘The Big Ticket’ gave all the backups, especially Davis, a verbal tongue-lashing, which led to the puffy-post crying.

I don’t know if this influences Boston’s season. However, Garnett, even if his ‘pep’ talk was justified, must remember his legendary intensity impacts different individuals in different ways. After all, these were teammates, colleagues, and friends, not telemarketers hitting him up in the middle of a family dinner.

Davis must mature. But there is no guarantee the Celtics sign another P.J. Brown type veteran late-season, so they need all their young forwards to have confidence for the playoffs. Yelling at and embarrassing ‘Big Baby’ publicly, even though that wasn’t Garnett’s intent, doesn’t achieve this goal.

KG DOESNT REALLY DESERVE TO CRITICIZE OTHERS. I DO THINK HIS INTENTIONS ARE GOOD, A TEAM NEEDS SOMEONE LIKE THAT TO IMPROVE TEAMMATES, AND THATS JUST HIS PERSONALITY HE’S INTENSE, IT’S GOOD FOR THE TEAM. BUT COMING FROM HIM ISNT HELPFUL BC HE DOESNT PLAY THAT WELL HIMSELF. PAUL PIERCE OR RAY ALLEN WOULD MAKE MORE SENSE. BUT BIGBABY SHOULD MATURE... .

I watched Garnett blow three passes last night...He looked like he was just hanging around waiting for his "Big Ticket" paycheck to come in......People who live in gla-------houses should not throw stones.... .

Garnett knows how to approach his teammates. After all, he’s the main reason they are NBA Champions. All those players love Garnett and this will only make them better as a team, not just Davis. Davis did not say anything negative about Garnett so evidently it was not a problem. His emotions just got the best of him because of his love and respect for Garnett. A leader like Garnett is a dream for any team. .

This is unbelievable: This is what people do in playgrounds but not in the NBA. People should respect each other and it’s not because of a game lost that you need to diminishe somebody like that. You have no idea what this would have as an impact to Davis later. The media will be all over him. I am sad to see that there are still some people that are enjoying the sadness on somebody else. What do you think Davis’ mother is thinking? Young guys are always looking up for their elder for advices. Do you think that Davis will be looking at KG this way? It’s a shame to see a grown man crying. Be strong Davis... .

There is a way to lash a player without causing a scene or demeaning or embassing a player. The locker room or pull the player to the side and tell he his shortcomings and how to better himself. Leaders on the court must teach the young players. When the leads begin to dwindle where was Coach Garnett then. You dont wait to the lead gets that far down. I believe Kevin has been in games where they blew leads when he was a starter. Case closed. .

I would have went Sprewell on him. There is a difference between embarrassing your teammates in when you are up by a tonne and in a close game. .

its rediculous the starters have to play lights out in hopes to hopefully not have to play anymore during the game getting an early rest for the next game only to have to come back in. At this pace if the c’s don’t get anyone through trade they are going to have dead legs by May. .

I think garnett was justified in what he did or said and is in the right position to do so. I think davis acted exactly as a young man would: he got upset, got frustrated and let his emotions get the best of him. But it shows that he’s passionate about what he’s doing, passionate about the game and the fact that he was up off the bench late high fiving garnett for that sweet alley oop shows he knows his place and is able to get past this incident. The celtics will be fine .

Hi ... Thanks for commenting. I agree much more is expected of Davis, and, frankly, he and the other young Celts must to do more to repeat. But to get that improved play, Garnett and the others must work with them, not chew them out as you mentioned. I also agree Davis should have handled it better, either in the locker room or elsewhere, but not on the bench. Thanks for commenting and bringing some good points. .

I think that in order to repeat as champions, every player must bring something a little different, and better, in the follow-up year. Big-baby, and the rest of the bench, can no longer be considered gimmick players whose goal is to excite the fans when they are able to score 2 points for the stats sheet. Teams will not give up in their pursuit to beat Boston, even if it appears the win is in-hand. The 2nd string cannot experiment with shots and poor execution when the lead is substantial. "Baby" was justified in fuming after what appeared to be getting chewed out, but should not have turned it into a spectacle on the bench; instead, wait he should have waited until the team retired to the locker room. Fortunately, based on the apparent public demeanor of these two players, they will resolve this quickly and publicly, without a doubt. .

Hi no-name poster ... Part of me agrees. But part of me also thinks great players and leaders ( that is what Garnett is or is seen to be) should consider modfying or slightly toning down what he says to a sensitive cat like Davis ... Look at all the attention from this situation, was it really worth whatever Garnett said? ... And what happens next time Garnett gets upset? The media will be all over this thing ... Who knows what was said or what else is going on with Davis, I just think sometime Garnett’s legendary intensity is misdirected, not intentionally, of course ... Thanks for expressing a thought even if you disagreed. .
